Set your iPod (or Zune, mp3 player, whatever) on shuffle. What are the first five songs that come up? You don’t have to play through all the way, you can just skip through them. Or, it you dare, share the first ten songs. And don’t cheat! Don’t just put down what makes you look cool.
I’ll start with ten of my own. I’m on my iPhone which only has 1535 of my favorite songs. Later when I’m home I’ll share ten from my iPod. It has just under 6,000 songs on it so the potential for embarrassment is much greater.
Okay, here are the first ten that my shuffle picked out:
Living Well Is The Best Revenge – R.E.M.
I’m Afraid Of Americans – David Bowie
Run Devil Run – Paul McCartney
King For A Day – Green Day
I’ve Got A Feeling – The Beatles
Elegantly Wasted – INXS
And Your Bird Can Sing – The Beatles
Private Idaho – The B-52’s
Born In The 50’s – The Police
Let’s Get Retarded – Black Eyed Peas
That could have gone much worse!

Anyone else notice anything like this?
I have 13k song sto choose from, and of that, i’ll just look at the first two letters of the alphabet. I have every AC/DC CD, that’s somewhere between 150 and 200 songs. I have every Antrhax CD, that’s probably between 100 and 150 songs. I have every Beatles CD including the multi-disc sets that came out in the 90s…that’s a good 200 to 250 songs at least. I’ve got every Beatie Boys CD…another close to 100 tracks. I have every Ozzy ero Black Sabbath album (all 8 studio albums, two official and one bootleg 2 disc live set)...another 100+ songs. These are like I said, just the As and Bs where I have over 100 songs per artist. Now, a random 50 songs out of 13,000, any of these artists should have more than a 50/50 chance of having shown up at least once. But yet none of them did. That in and of itself is weird to me.
But then look at what DID show up. Some of it I’m not surprised. I’ve got a ton of Tori Amos, and she showed up twice. Bad Religion, I have all their CDs, now they showed up twice in a ROW, which is really weird. No surprise a White Stripes song showed up…I have all their albums and probably a dozen or so live bootleg shows, many of which are multi disc sets. Dave Matthews showed up a couple tims, to be expected with as many of his CDs as I have. Nirvana, same thing as the White Stripes…all their studio albums and a ton of bootlegs. BUT, here’s what’s weird.
I have 8 songs out of 50 which come from artists fro whom I have only ONE album, and 9 songs from artists for whom I have only two albums. That means over 1/3 of what showed up at random (17/50 or 34%) comes from let’s say less than 300 songs out of 13,000 or about 3 to 4% of my collection. Even weirder, I have one song that came from a collection where that is the only song I have by that artist.
I guess what I’m trying to say is of the 50 random songs, 1/3 come from about 3% of my collection, whereas a full 10% of my collection isn’t even represented. I guess that’s why they call it “random”.
what is this, round 5 for me?
You Stole The Sun From My Heart – Manic Street Preachers
Pale Spectre – The Wake
Rainfall – The Apples in Stereo
We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful – Morrissey
Dennehey – Serengeti
Feng Shui – Q-Burns Abstract Message
Ten Minutes – The Get Up Kids
Revolution 909 – Daft Punk
Atari Teenage Riot II – Atari Teenage Riot
Whiskey – The Amphetameanies
Now having said that, I’ll post list #6 so I can catch up to the most prolific posters:
1. Gold – Prince
2. Look at This Face (Oh My God They’re Gorgeous) – Handsome Boy Modeling School
3. Presente – Control Machete
4. Clowntime is Over – Elvis Costello and the Attractions
5. Steppin’ Stone – Black Label Society
6. Level – The Raconteurs
7. Voodoo Doll – Fergie
8. Dead Cats, Dead Rats – The Doors
9. Something to Believe in – Aqualung
10. My Little Pill – Prince
OK, this just adds the weirdness. Still no AC/DC, Anthrax, Beasie Boys, Beatles or Black Sabbath, but
3 songs by artists for whom I have only one album
3 songs by artists for whom I have only two albums
Prince, who is represented by about 25 total CDs, shows up twice on the same list, despite not making it into the first 50 songs.
Curious, is anyone else noticing anything ‘weird’ in their selections?
@dalepetrie much lurve and respect for Handsome Boy!

@eponymoushipster – I found a bootleg copy on ebay, some guy had taped all the shows and put them on 4 DVDs. Normally I wouldn’t buy something like this, but it was cheap and I realized they were never going to put this show on DVD. Of course, this was before I’d ever heard of bit torrents…Still if they ever come out on DVD in full digital quality from the masters with special features and the whole shebang, I’ll buy it anyway.
