Have you heard about "The Secret?"?

The Secret
Typing this question I realized what a weird looking word secret is, but that’s besides the point!

Rant, rave, etc.. about it (if you have any knowledge of it, or about the knowledge you just picked up if you clicked the link I provided)

I have, and I think it makes sense. (about being positive and you will attract positivity in your life) correct? or am I thinking of a different secret?

TenaciousDenny's avatar

The secret is all about banging Danica Patrick in the desert on a dune buggy while drinking beer. At least that’s what my vision board says.

dynamicduo's avatar

Yeah, my mom and sister love to bring it up to justify their coincidences. I give it a chuckle. I don’t believe in it, no.

Maverick's avatar

Yes. It’s stupid. It amounts to “the power of positive thinking” – which I’m all in favor of. But there is absolutely nothing more substantial to it than that. Save your money and do something nice for someone else – you’ll reap greater rewards than that stupid book/DVD.

gailcalled's avatar

@Tenacious: Your Vision board needs remedial spelling; (dune buggy).

TenaciousDenny's avatar

Thanks gailcalled, it has been corrected. I’d hate to look like a fool on the interwebs.

kevbo's avatar

Yes, and I think it’s true for the most part. With those kinds of things, though, you should keep in mind the possibility of a bigger or deeper truth that is being withheld. There are other “names” for the same phenomenon such as Think and Grow Rich and The Science of Getting Rich. Not that all about “The Secret” is getting rich.

I will say this. I made a point a few years ago to be gracious about receiving gifts from other people. At the time, I meant things like compliments in addition to physical gifts, and it was in response to my realizing that I was short circuiting those interactions with my stubborn sense of what was appropriate or whatever. In a few short years, that change in orientation has brought me a lot more than I expected.

onesecondregrets's avatar

@Maverick…haha don’t worry, I haven’t spent any money towards it, just time.

onesecondregrets's avatar

@kevbo…Also don’t worry. I’ve researched a lot and have found all different kinds of books, ideas, approaches that stream into the same idea that The Secret does. I am trying to maintain an understanding of the general idea it offes without getting sucked into some kind of media shenannigans or nonsensical stuff.

eponymoushipster's avatar

absolutely rubbish.

TenaciousDenny's avatar

Sometimes I like to keep secrets, like when I come into work without wearing underwear.

onesecondregrets's avatar

@TenaciousDenny…you are one kinky mfer.

tb1570's avatar

@TenaciousDenny: Danica Patrick is a dog!!! That’s one secret you can keep for yourself!!

aprilsimnel's avatar

My deal is, if Oprah’s touting it, it’s probably a load of BS. Right up there with Tony Robbins and those types.

Lies and slander! All of it!

onesecondregrets's avatar

@eponymoushipster…but you and mom already made pie! ...warm apple pie.

lolol ksrsly i gotta stop.

Yes. I think it’s more or less a rip off of Creative Visualization.

…not to be negative.

I believe that positive thinking can definitely have a positive effect on your life, however… I’m not a fan of The Secret because I’ve seen too many people take it to the extreme. I don’t agree that if something horrible happens to someone (e.g. their child dies of cancer) that it could have been prevented if only the parents had been positive enough, or that they somehow brought it upon themselves because they were too negative. There are enough random traumatic events in the world that people don’t need unwarranted guilt heaped on them.

Positive thinking is good and can be very impactful (I like the idea of karma), but it isn’t the governing law of the universe or anything.

dynamicduo's avatar

@aprilsimnel – that’s a great policy, and a great way to summarize it. I’ll have to remember it for the future!

Consider: Opera gave us Dr Phil. Ugh.

bodyhead's avatar

Are you talking about the “Crying Game”? The secret is penis.

SpatzieLover's avatar

Shhhhhhh…It’s a S. E.C.R.E.T….....

emilyrose's avatar

@amanderveen—I totally agree. I don’t think that every bad thing happening to a person is a result of their own negativity or actions, however in some cases, I believe it is. The most powerful thing that has happened in my life over the past few years is realizing my true power. In most circumstances I have a choice of attitude and action. There are a few things that still trip me up and I don’t know where to find my power, but at least I am willing to seek it. I think the Secret carries a powerful message. Of course some of it is a little out there and exaggerated, but I think the mind is an incredibly powerful thing. Years ago I would never have considered myself an overly positive person. Even though I am still cynical and find plenty to complain about, my overall perspective has changed, thus changing my life and overall happiness.

I always thought that Secret was strong enough for a man but made for a woman.

The main thing that I hate about “The Secret” is the same thing that I hate about religion. The entire premise is that you, and only you, are special by belonging to this special club.

For example, after reading The Secret a friend of mine said “it really works! There’s something to it…”. When I asked him what evidence this relavation was based on he told me about how he was late for a meeting on the other side of town and he had used projecting the vision of himself arriving on time to make the universe bend to his will (which is essentially what the big secret is). I said, “so you honestly believe that the universe intervened and changed the lights for you so that you could make it on time? What about all the other people that your path crossed?Do you honestly believe that the universe cares more about your wishes than all those other people?” Apparently, he did. But I don’t buy it. What if there were two people that knew the secret that were doing the same thing and their paths crossed? It seems to me a much simpler explaination would be that either it was just a coincidence or, more likely, because he was thinking about his goal while driving that he was – perhaps sub-consciously making driving decisions that helped him reach his goal in a way that he would not have otherwise. Of course, it’s just as likely that his distracted driving could have caused an accident.

Live your life. Set goals for yourself. Be nice to everyone along the way. Don’t be distracted by diversions or small minds. And always be happy with yourself. That is the true secret.

I actually found The Secret to be pretty elementary, but it is a good introduction into spirituality for those who are at that stage.

@peedub – good observation, Shakti Gawain covered a lot of the same principles years ago, but this was made to be a bit more accessible to a wider audience.

Johnny_Rambo's avatar

There are dead secrets and there are live secrets. Live secrets yearn for the light of day. They have life.

KingMalefic's avatar

The dvd plays at my house almost at least once if not more then that on every single given day…. Not my choosing but I am a wee bit tired i will come back and explain more.

asmonet's avatar

Load of fucking bullshit.

amanderveen's avatar

@emilyrose – I agree – changing your attitude can make a huge difference in your life. I know that consciously changing my mental attitude has greatly impacted my life for the better. I’ve found it especially helpful when things seemed to be falling apart around me – life is much easier to deal with, even when I’m not dealt the best hand.

madcapper's avatar

wtf is “The Secret”? I wanna be in the know… or do I?

Trustinglife's avatar

I’ve watched The Secret a few times, and I usually am left inspired, creative, hopeful, gratefull, and happy.

I appreciate being reminded of the law of attraction – when I’m in a good mood. :) Seriously, sometimes I’ll feel like complaining and stop myself due to the impact the film had on me.

Jack79's avatar

yes, I read it and never understood what the hype was all about. It’s a “secret”? I’ve known this so-called “secret” ever since I was 5. I’ve lived my life by it, and have achieved everything I’ve ever wanted. There’s nothing secretive about it. I just think they used the word to sell copies.

madcapper's avatar

what the hell is it?!?

eponymoushipster's avatar

@madcapper i’m pretty sure it has to do with a 15th century heretic named Rambaldi and a device that has a floating red ball.

bodyhead's avatar

Though not true in all cases, I find that in this case:

Secrets secrets are no fun. Secrets secrets hurt someone.

fireside's avatar

It couldn’t have been much of a secret because all they did was keep quoting people who already knew the secret .

eponymoushipster's avatar

@bodyhead he who did the rhyme, did the crime.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

i LOVE the secret. maybe this makes me sound absolutely batty, but i love it. i haven’t read the book yet, but they showed it to us in psychology last year, and i thought it was so interesting. i don’t know about the validity of the idea, but what a nice idea, that you can change your life by changing your mind. it’s a nice thing to live by. maybe not to the extremes that they suggest, but i don’t see thinking positively as anything that could hurt anybody. so why not?

asmonet's avatar

@bodyhead: stripper lurve.

eponymoushipster's avatar

wait – is the secret really two small children in a church in Scotland?

fireside's avatar

Rosslyn Chapel?

lifeflame's avatar

I’ve skimmed parts of it. I think the basic premises are sound, though like fireside, I’ve seen it better presented in different forms. Being Happy by Andrew Matthews comes to mind – I read it when I was much younger, it has great illustrations.

What kind of put me off about it though was the way it was packaged. I think it does come across as exclusive, and like amanderveen, I’ve had friends who have taken it quite militantly. The whole purpose of the book seems also quite self-centered, it’s all about “how I can make the universe work for me.” I mean, that’s sort of like asking how to make gravity work for me. Gravity doesn’t really exist to work for me—that’s just the way the universe works.

Trustinglife's avatar

@lifeflame I read Being Happy when I was 16!!! That had such a profound impact on me, and I hadn’t remembered that book in a long time. Lurve to you for bringing back happy memories!

madcapper's avatar

ok so I just watched an episodes of Always Sunny where they talk about “The Secret” funny shit.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@madcapper i forgot about that! nice catch.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Listen (doo dah doo), do you want to know a secret (doo dah doo)? Do your promise not to tell? Whoa -oo-whoa-oh, closer (doo dah doo). Let me whisper in your ear, (doo dah doo) say the words you long to hear…

onesecondregrets's avatar

@madcapper…is it youtube-able? Or tell me about it! I’m intrigued, especially since it was Always Sunny, it has to be sarcastically entertaining hahh.

onesecondregrets's avatar

@lifeflame…I’m gonna invest time into this Being Happy novel. Seems quite cute and simple.

madcapper's avatar

@onesecondregrets not sure if it is youtube-able but the episode is called ” The Gang Gets Extreme: Home Makeover Edition” so check it!!

madcapper's avatar

ep 12 season 4 if I am not mistaken

Trustinglife's avatar

Being Happy isn’t a novel. It’s more like a self-help book, but with all kinds of quirky cartoons and other fun stuff.

Ria777's avatar

@oneseconregrets, novel? novel does not mean “book”.

SeventhSense's avatar

Kind of ironic in that the negative voices when asked this question say the theory doesn’t work yet they attract the same negative experiences into their world that they put out. Change can be a bitch. Consciousness is the element that has eluded us in the modern age. Intent and imagination are the forerunners of all positive change.
As Einstein said,
“Imagination is more important than intelligence”.

scamp's avatar

Positive thinking never hurt anyone, but this paticular ‘secret’ is a cult-like way for someone to make a bunch of money off of lonely depressed people, IMHO

DeanV's avatar

@scamp: I agree. And it’s worked. Just saying you want to be a fire truck doesn’t necessarily mean you can. This knowledge is nothing new, this is just the first person to write a mainstream book about it.

Pol_is_aware's avatar

I ROFL at the preview. Whens the parody come out?

maryleedy's avatar

I liked the DVD and the book and every other book I read after that relating to it.

The Secret = The Law of Attraction (that’s the ‘secret’)

Energy flows where attention goes. Remember that. The longer you focus, think, dream, and appreciate/grateful of something, the more it comes into your life. If you think/feel your life is crap, the more crap you get, the more good stuff you appreciate, the more of that you get.

Like attracts like.

All you’re really doing is sending out a frequency or “vibe” as I like to call it, and the Universe is matching up a similar vibe back to you. The timeframe of the event, person, or thing coming to you depends on how long or much you continue to focus on it.

It’s also about awareness. Think about this:

When you decide on what kind of car you want and then you buy it from the dealership, you suddenly notice all the other cars just like yours. Right? But, the real kicker is that you need to “FEEL” the emotion of what it is you want. That is the vibe that gets sent out because your emotion/feeling is energy. So…..if you think about, feel the emotion, and believe you will get it, you will see it when it comes to you.

It’s not a matter of bending to your will, that makes it sound like it’s not flexible and it needs coercing of some sort. The Law of Attraction just is. It’s always on and never shuts off. Sometimes it seems like it shuts off but that’s only if you change your belief about what you want.

Once you become clear on what you want with no hesitation, no doubts, no fear, then you let it go and let it fly. Once you let the doubt creep in, it negates the vibe, drops the ball so to speak.

Example: (note: this is not about me, just simply an example)

I want to find a job in the next 2 weeks as a receptionist in an upscale hair & nail salon making $18 and hour, with benefits, close to home and working from 10am-4pm. Yes! (smiling and waving arms in the air)

GOOD!

Oh, but I can’t make that kind of money, no one is going to hire me and pay that much for a silly phone job and it’s not going to happen anytime soon.

BAM! The vibe dissipates and now you have to start over and keep saying the first part until your mind doesn’t come back with a “yeah right” retort.

Granted, this was a simple thing but really, think about it, how many times have you said to yourself or out loud or to somebody else what you want and then say how stupid it was thinking you were going to get it?

Many times if you retraced your steps back as to why something happened or didn’t happen, you’ll find your answer and guess what? You still have a chance to make it happen, just change your thoughts/feelings to a better attitude. You can be pissed off about something but just acknowledge it and then move on. Do not dwell on it or wallow in it. Kinda like the “bad hair day” thing, once that starts then you spill your coffee on your shirt and then you’re late for work, and then the boss is crabby and your day just went to #$%#$!

Now, when it comes to the guilt trip people were loaded with about they’re responsible for bad things happening like cancer and stuff. It’s not about blaming anyone. But I will say this though, when your body is out of alignment with what you feel emotionally, spirtually, and mentally, the misalignment will manifest itself into physical pain. Here’s a good book explaining more about that – Louise Hay “You Can Heal Your Life”. I’m sorry the website eludes me at the moment.

I’ve read and watched stuff about The Secret and The Law of Attraction for the last 4 years, no I’m not an expert, just a very avid student of it. I enjoy learning it and practicing it to further my self improvement. Yeah, I still have my bad days, lol, but I handle them differently and more effectively.

Coincidences are incidents that aren’t done enough to create a pattern for us to see clearly. :-)

You deserve a lurve for reading my post. ;-)
