Are you able to name any Well done films dealing with the 'Zombie' topic?

Asked by Anatelostaxus (1428points) February 14th, 2009

like: dawn of the living dead – G. A. Romero…
..any seriously well done, artistic / conceptual film, not ‘stupid horror’ without any kind of plot…

There is one film that had to do with the zombie theory (specifically in Haiti) and it was based on true events in the life of Wade Davis who is an ethnobotanist and his research of psychoactive plants. It was called “The Serpent and the Rainbow” and it was a really good movie, in my opinion.

@Bluefreedom yes, that’s what I’m looking for.. thanks for sharing that… I agree to that.. I know the film and wouldn’t mind watching it again.. Don’t you remember another one, with a similar plot.. it was I believe based in the Caribbean as well.. Cheers..

Shaun of the Dead – it does have a plot, and it successfully lifts from several other well-known zombie films.

28 Days Later. I thought it was one of the best zombie flicks made. The sequel, 28 weeks later, was also good.

FIDO…It’s a comedy but it deals with some dark serious zombie topics.

@Blondesjon I wanted to see that one! Billy Connelly’s in that, yeah? it’s good?

@eponymoushipster…It’s brilliant. Billy Connelly could have easily fucked it up but instead hangs back and let’s the story speak for itself. Hilarious.

@Blondesjon cool, i’ll have to go dig it up somewhere!

World War Z is coming. If you haven’t read the book by Max Brooks, go buy it today. It’s told as a series of first-person accounts after zombies have severely ravaged the world. It’s the most comprehensive and, quite frankly, well-written and thought-provoking book I’ve ever read about a fictitious epidemic.

Anyone heard about this Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? apparently, it’s being optioned for a movie as well.

mrswho's avatar

@eponymoushipster YEAH! I want to read that so much! When I heard that it was being made into a movie I could hardly belive it! It could either be the best movie ever, or the most disappointing.

@mrswho uhm. Austen and zombies? where could it go wrong? it’s the perfect date movie…two thumbs way way up!

mrswho's avatar

@eponymoushipster I’m hopeful about it. I hope that it gets a studio that will let it have a wide release. I also think that more classic literature needs zombies. Undeath of a Salesman, Far from the Madding Zombie Crowd, Sense and Sensiblity and Zombies, and Midsummer’s Night’s (of the living dead) Dream,

@mrswho it’s definitely a different spin on both genres. that’s why i think Shaun of the Dead was so hilarious.

What about Romeo + Juliet but with zombies? at the end, the poison, the knife – but then they come back and eat people!? gold, baby, solid gold!

mrswho's avatar

@eponymoushipster NICE! That sounds really romantic, they can be together. Awwww. Shuan of the Dead was just terrific. I need to see Hot Fuzz. And Shaun is going to play Scotty in the new Star Trek movie! yay

@mrswho have you seen Simon Pegg’s TV show from the UK, Spaced? A lot of the stuff in Shaun had roots in Spaced, like “Can dogs look straight up?”. Entire episodes of it are on YouTube.

@eponymoushipster I’ll have to check that out.

I just watched Fido today. I wasn’t expecting too much from it because… come on. It’s horror-comedy. And while horror and comedy are probably my favorite genres when done correctly, that’s a rare thing, and even more rare when combined. But this movie was actually pretty awesome. It was like Lassie/Leave It to Beaver with zombies! It’s the 1950s US, only there’s been a war against the zombies, which we won, and now there are collars that render them harmless and they work as servants. It’s actually surprisingly clever, I think. And the characters! Oh my god! There is complexity! There is development! They’re not just static stereotypes or zombie food! It isn’t really scary at all, and it’s not laugh-out-loud funny (except for one deleted scene) but I was thoroughly amused through the whole thing. Yeah, I definitely liked it a lot.
