Please help! Dog question?

Asked by JMCSD (243points) February 14th, 2009 from iPhone

hello, my dog just ate my other dogs food. She is a black lab (not a purebread) and weighs about 70–80 pounds, and is 6. The other dog is on ivermectin, and gets a 4 cc dosage, my dog I think almost ate all of it. Maybe around 3cc’s or so. What should I do????

man, even dogs are effected by the economy. my dog always eats the cat food when his bowl is empty. if your lab is healthy, he/she should be alright. just make sure you keep an eye on the lab and that he has plenty of water to flush the system.

I’m not quite sure if that will have an affect on her or not, but if you’re really worried then you might want to call your vet or animal hopsital just to make sure.

I give all my dogs (akita, little brown dog and a dingo mix) ivermec for heartworm, ticks, mange, internal parasites (except tapes). It should have no effect, the only dogs who appear to have any reaction to it are members of the collie family. Why do you only give it to one dog and do you give it on a daily basis? It is okay to give it to a dog who is heartworm positive also.

Well, you could induce vomiting by giving your dog a small amount of hydrogen peroxide but I suspect that it’s too late now. Next time call your vet or local poison control center.

she seems to be doing okay but she only ate about an hour ago so I still keeping a close eye. We only give it to one dog because he has demodectic mange. She (my dog) doesn’t. I did call the vet who verified that she SHOULD be fine, but to keep an eye on any neurological symptoms such as eye or body movement. Gosh I’d feel terrible if my mistake hurt her :(

In a dog that size that amount should be fine. You can call a vet over the phone and they will tell you without your having to bring the dog in.

The vet probably said that to protect his flank. I know lots of breeders and people who give ivermec monthly. Once a month I go to the indigenous communities around here and dispense it to all the dogs, there is a connection between mange in the dogs and scabies in the kids and when the dogs are on ivermec they don’t get mange and the kids don’t get scabies as often. I give my akita who weighs about 90 lbs, 3cc by injection and the camp dogs weigh about 20–45 and they get 1.5cc orally, so really your dog should be fine and won’t need to be wormed for while.

@JMCSD Sorry, missed the bit about the vet call. You should start to be feeling reassured then by the vet and what you have read here. Of course, you will still be vigilant like a good dog owner.

a tiny bit, but of course I am still concerned. How long would it take for any reactions to occur? Will the next 24 hours only tell, or would an hour of been long enough to tell?

We had the same thing happen, where a much smaller dog (30 pounds) ate a bigger dog’s (60 pounds) dose. The vet said “Keep an eye on him for a day, but probably nothing will happen.” The vet was right: nothing happened.

Feed the dogs in different rooms next time.

Give your dog food at the same time every day, give him just enough time to eat, then pick it up even if he didn’t eat it. In time, the dogs will eat on your schedule and they won’t have a chance to eat each other’s food, not to mention attracting strays, cats, coons, bears, etc.

I agree, your dog should be fine.
