Why do the insides of my braces feel like ninja stars?

Asked by peedub (8708points) February 14th, 2009 from iPhone

I’m talking about the bands (around the molars). I don’t think Dr. forgot to grind anything Down. My friend complains of the same problem.
Is there a reason they’re so sharp?

Because they are. They ARE ninja stars. And there are at least 32 ninjas inside your mouth right now about to attack. Beware.

Have you ever had ninja stars inside your mouth? Are you sure that’s what they would feel like? You might want to try it out to make sure that the comparison is valid and that they don’t feel like sporks in your gums or tiny katanas.

Because anything in the mouth feels 10,000 times larger than it actually is! Did your dentist give you any wax to put on them?

That said I used to have braces and I would kept trying to put wax on them but it didn’t stay on for too long and I swallowed a bunch of wax. Now I am somewhat candle like, but don’t worry, eventually the insides of your mouth adapt and you feel better. Good luck until then! (ps, every time they tighten your braces it will hurt a lot but the stabing/poking issue will be gone in a few weeks for ever!)

Yeah, I forgot it at home, hence this goofy question.

I know all about ninja stars. These are of the sharp variety;
not those shits you get in tijuana.

You could try gum as an alternative (not to chew, just to protect your cheeks, the cheeks on your face I mean)

Thanks for the tip. Anything’s better than slice-tongue. Tonsil hockey 2009: out of the question.

Also be careful if the other person has braces too. There were some kids in Scandinavia that got stuck together in a movie theater. Though hilarious that would be pretty embarassing if someone had to call the fire department.

While your mouth, as mrswho so wisely said, will soon adapt, if you do choose to use wax make sure that the relevant surface is totally dry, as with the wax, before you apply it. This prevents the bloody (one hopes not literally) stuff from sliding off those pearly whites (and silvers).
