How to take an Imac home from foreign country--can the stand be folded flat?

Asked by nary (3points) February 15th, 2009

We live in China. We really want to buy a 20” Imac here, but wonder how to take it home if we ever have to leave China. Is there a way to make it fit as a carry-on? We wondered if the stand folds flat or can be cut and later bolted back (hubby is quite adepts at these things). Is there a safe way to take it in checked baggage, or to ship it separately? We’ve looked at MacBk Pro, but price so high, and we like having a 20” screen.

It comes in a box, right?

Save the box.

This Apple Support doc shows how to open the back panel but it also shows the panel and stand as a single part.

You’d actually have to open one up to see. Maybe someone else here knows how.

The stand folds in. It can easily fold in for easy movement. I just did it a few months ago. I have a 17” one since I am poor. But the 20” one should be VESA. So you can yank the arm off with a couple of screws. I wouldn’t worry about it.
