What is the bumper sticker "God isn’t big enough for one religion" implying?

Asked by Breefield (2733points) February 15th, 2009

Notably plastered among other stickers such as “Proud parent of a soldier”, etc…

I’ve seen it on a few cars. But I’m having trouble…figuring out what it’s trying to imply. I’m versed in the teachings of Christianity, although Agnostic, so I’m not completely stupid when it comes to this sort of thing. I can’t seem to put my finger on what this statement is trying to get across.

(Caveat: the bumper sticker I see is usually, God is too big to fit in one religion.)

I think they mean that no one religion can corner the market on defining God. The Christians know a little bit of what God is like, the Jews know some other parts, the Pagans and Muslims and Hindus etc… all religions have a view of the Divine and a thread of truth runs through them all.

The idea is that God is far too big and encompassing, too, for there to be just One True Way. God is for everyone. And God can’t be fit into one little book, one little box on a shelf – God is everything, everywhere. More than one religion can hold.

Many religions subscribe to the notion that if you don’t think exactly as they do then you are going to Hell….that all other religions are “wrong” and their line of thinking/doctrine is the only one that is “right”.

I would interpret the bumper sticker to mean that the car owner believes God hears from believers of a variety of faiths.

The unity of God is one of the major tenets of the Bahai faith.

The way I interpret that quote, though I prefer laureth’s version, is that no one religion can lay claim to God. God has been revealed through all religions and is the summation of spiritual experience.

That no mortal institution can have a monopoly on the soul.

That particular bumper sticker implies that the driver of that vehicle would like to tell other drivers of other vehicles that he or she isn’t religious.

Breedfield, are you sure it didn’t say what Laureth suggested?

@NaturalMineralWater I’m not convinced that the person with the bumper sticker is not religious. They may not be, but they might also be religious but way open to the God of all traditions, not just their own.

@La_chica_gomela – I’m pretty sure it said what I posted, the link she posted didn’t look anything like the one I saw :/

Then I have no idea. I would say it’s making fun of the “God is too big for just one religion” stickers, but if they’re on cars that also have “support the troops” type stickers, that seems unlikely. :-/ I feel bad I don’t know either!
