Bohemian Rhapsody has a special place in my heart, but so does “Brand New Day” from Dr. Horrible’s singalong blog.
@Elumas well done. Actually, that isn’t the greatest song in the world, it’s just a tribute.
I think this question needs to have “by genre” to make it easier to answer. You can’t compare, say, U2 to Mozart.
alright then. by genre. i’m looking for multiple answers.
Rock/Pop – A Day In The Life by The Beatles
Reggae/Ska – Many Rivers To Cross by Jimmy Cliff
R&B/Soul – Think by Aretha Franklin
Classical/Opera – Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah
Nothing even compares to this one IMO.
I was waiting for that to come up.
It always does.
Personally, I love While My Guitar Gently Weeps by the Beatles
But Bohemian Rhapsody is amazing too…
Also, this may be what you are looking for.
@PnL: I also really love this.
Unnecessary bar exit!
Twinkle twinkle little star. And all its variations by Mozart.
Certainly one of the best known songs.
@asmonet again, solid gold.
<goes to “church-bang some hoes”>
I have so many favorite songs but one that I always throw out there first when I’m asked this question is What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
pachbels canon (hopefully i spelled it right).
@Glow: Yeah, a good one, but…he was kind of a one hit wonder.
Ancient: Gregorian chants (anon., recovered by the monks of Solesmes)
Ancient Folk: She Moved Through the Fair (anon.)
Classical: Symphony #9 (Beethoven)
Romantic: the Etudes (Chopin)
Neo-classical: Rite of Spring (Stravinsky)
Modern: Symphonic Dances (Bernstein)
Musical: The Music Man (Willson)
March: Stars & Stripes Forever (Sousa)
Modern Folk: Blowin’ in the Wind (Dylan)
Jazz: Take 5 (Brubeck)
R&B/Soul: (Love Is Like A) Heat Wave (Holland-Dozier-Holland)
Rock/Pop: With a Little Help from My Friends (Lennon and McCartney)
@PnL is it weird that I have that URL memorized?
It Is Well with My Soul
Horatio Spafford
This is the thread that never ends / it just goes on and on my friend / somebody started asking it a long, long time ago…
@asmonet – I hadn’t seen that, lol4rl, thanks!
@Eambos – I think a lot of us might have subconsciously memorized it just so we know what’s coming. But yes, it’s still strange :P
Haha, you’re welcome, there’s also one for Take On Me. I lol4rl, every single time.
@PnL
Why does that video always come up on Fluther??
Anywho, I can not pick a favorite! Somethin from the 90’s.
@asmonet
Wasn’t there a part of “take on me” that was messed up?
I can not remember…
Deacon Blues by Steely Dan
time after time. sang and played [trumpet] by Chet Baker.
Super star trades man…..I have forgotten the name of an creater.
Telegraph Road by the Dire Straits
Ok, the question is like saying “who is the most beautiful woman that ever lived?”. You’re not even asking within a specific genre or time period. Telegraph Road is just the first that came to mind, amongst several hundred truly amazing songs that I wish I had written (and a few that I actually did write). Not to mention thousands and thousands of songs I’ve loved.
Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley.
—
Not sure how to classify that by genre… but I like it… and felt like making at least one submission here.
Only heard the Jeff Buckley version a few days ago. Pretty good. Incidentally, it’s by Leonard Cohen. And it’s my gf’s favourite song
@gail – Trout is great! Always reminds me of Waiting for God.
@Steel: “Trout” makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, still. RE: WFG; Do you mean the very funny British Sit Com at the old folk’s home?
Yep, the britcom. Trout (part of the Finale) was the theme song for the series.
WFG was my oldest daughter’s favorite show when she was a teen. Our local PBS station aired it and she watched it religiously. It was a funny show.
farewell transmission from songs:ohia.
@AstroChuck and @steelmarket: Diana was a terrific role model and her boyfriend (can’t recall his name) was wonderfully round the bend. Why can’t the Americans do similar things? To the Manor Born, A Fine Romance, As Time Goes By, Are You Being Served?, Keeping Up Appearances, West Enders, Coronation Street were all fresh and funny and original.
@gailcalled because we’re better at just stealing BBC show ideas.
@gail, I ask myself that same question every time I enjoy a britcom. Still have not figured it out. At this time, I am just glad that we have the britcoms and their influence on US tv shows. And this applies to the serious brit shows as well.
The whole concept of hollywoodization is skewered well in As Time Goes By when the Americans make Lionel’s book into a movie.
@Elumas Dammit! i was gonna say that!
As far as music that bring tears to your eyes, I’d nominate:
– O mio babbino caro, as sung by Renee Fleming,
– River, as sung by Joni Mitchell,
– Into the West, as sung by Anne Lennox,
– A Single Petal of a Rose, as played by Joe Temperley.
hmm, may have to spin this off
I don’t know, but it would have to be by Siouxsie And The Banshees.
good choice, saranwrapper
” Flower of Scotland ”
But I’m partial to ” Slow down you move to fast, got to make the morning last ”
St. James Infirmary
It’s my favorite anyways and the sheer bulk of material relating to it is enough to keep someone busy and interested. I love that I have something like 18 versions of my favorite song, so technically while I have favorite one favorite song I have a many different recordings of it. I think I like the Lou Rawls and James Booker versions best. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the Booker version online, but I found these:
Lou Rawls
What Me Worry Jug Band
Cab Calloway
Louis Armstrong
The White Stripes
Gutter Twins
Joe Cocker
Bob Dylan (but he changed the title and all the lyrics)
and Nick Cave references it here
wiki
there is also a rather fatty blog dedicated to researching the song and related material.
