Where should I move?

Asked by Maverick (2478points) February 15th, 2009 from iPhone

Ok, seems my life took a major dump this past week. I’m seriously considering moving for an extended period (6mths-1year) to avoid the outrageous rents in Vancouver. So, where should I go? It should be:
– cheap cost of living
– relatively safe
– warmer climate preferred
– must have high speed Internet access
Any ideas? I was thinking is Costa Rica but it turns out to not be that much cheaper.

United states, maybe the florida area for the warmer climate. Not the gulf side, it is more expensive to live there.

Thailand. That’s where I disappear for a month or two if everything here gets too drab.

Cost of living, roughly 20 Bucks a day, including room, beer and board…

I just moved to Colorado and I love it. But I’ve lived in 4 other states. As for low prices, I say Florida, or here in Colorado. The gulf side of Florida actually is not that expensive, and I like it a lot better than the ocean side. Colorado’s beautiful though. The winter gets chilly of course, but it does get fairly hot in the summer. Florida has lots to do, high-speed internet and has lots of sunny days

Sorry, I should have specified that I’m not considering anything in the USA. And by cheaper, I meant substantially cheaper. My goal would be to make what little money I have go about twice as far as it does here.

@TaoSan Thailand is definitely an option. I’ll do some preliminary reasearch. Thanks!

I’m not sure why I was so focused on Central America.

@afghanmoose Morocco would be awesome! Is it actually cheap? Do they really have good Internet? Eqypt also might be good. Dubai is definitely not cheap though.

Oh, one other criteria:
– it should be politically stable.

Also, I’m interested if anyone has any first-hand experience to go along with their recommendation. ;)

You should probably do like on the Last King of scotland and just spin the globe and point.. yes.. yes that would definitely be wise. I’d recommend doing that. o.O

You might want to look at a position teaching English abroad.

Go to Bratislava if you really want to stretch your dollar.

@Maverick Morocco is insanely cheap. If you happen to go I recommend Essaouira (a beautiful seaside town) and Chefchaouen, also a gorgeous town, hidden in the mountains near the Spanish border.

@Maverick, before you go to Morocco, read Paul Bowles,
The Sheltering Sky. Then choose Belize.

move to a southern state like Alabama or something. They have pretty low standard of living cost. But also lower wages and higher unemployment. Not sure what you plan on achieving by moving temporarily.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@NaturalMineralWater, Puerto Rico is not cheap.

@Maverick, when are you planning on leaving? What do you estimate the fixed cost of this action being in order to justify the savings? You will need to fund plane tickets, storage of furniture, etc.?

Bangalore, India

Warm (but not hot), less expensive, somewhat safe (just stay out of narrow, dark alleys), and, since it is the computer capital of India (and the place where all our call centers have gone), it surely must have really fast Internet service. Here are some opinions about the cost of living there.

La Paz Mexico is much cheaper but close to Cabo. I’m not sure about internet.

Unfortunately Fluther seems to have eaten my previous response, so I’ll try to recreate it.

@susanc Yes, Belize looks beautiful.

@alfredaprufrock if I could find somehere acceptable I’d be ready to go in about 2 weeks. More realistically though, probably near the end of march.

I’m assuming that I can get there, pay for accomodations and living expenses (nothing too extravagent) and some basic sightseeing for less than what it would cost me to live here… Preferrably a lot less. Assuming that an apartment an ancillory expenses here run about $1500/mth, for 6 mths then I guess my budget is around $9000 Cdn. I would prefer that number to be down around the $6000 mark. Flights seem to be cheap atm, so I think it’s possible.

@pathfinder actually, a month ago my goal was to be in Australia for new years eve 2009. However, given everything that’s changed for me since then that goal looks damn near impossible ATM.

Thanks for all the great ideas! I’m certainly inspired by some of the options.
