Have you ever followed a "Consumer Reports" recommendation and was sorry you did?

Asked by Mr_M (7624points) February 16th, 2009

For weeks I’ve been hearing about how they rate “8 O’Clock” coffee the best. Had some. They MUST be kidding! Ever buy something they rated highly and thought it was awful? Ever buy something they rated poorly and thought it was great?

Thanks! It’s too bad you can’t see the animation. It actually smokes and blinks!

Yeah. I bought a Hoover Wind Tunnel self-propelled vac on their recommendation. My wife hates it because it’s too heavy to carry up the stairs and is very hard to maneuver. I hate it because every time it sucks up the fringe from one of the rugs, it gets caught in the brush and the drive belt burns up. I’ve replaced the belt on the thing so many times that I buy them by the dozen now. What idiot designed this thing?

Nope, I don’t follow such recommendations. To me, they’re the exact same as a random person’s recommendation because their criteria for a “quality product” is likely not the same criteria as I use, and thus their recommendations won’t have much relevance.

I subscribed for one year even though I wasn’t and am not much of a shopper. Their top-rated toaster turned out to be a piece of junk.

I have learned more from ‘personal reviews’ and comments from others on items I am interested in than to rely on Consumers Report.

I have looked at the coffee pots on there and the evaluations they give and think they are nuts totally!

I guess it is buyer be ware when you decide to buy something. Even other sites, it is hard sometimes to ‘really believe’ the reviews given on particular items.
