I’d like one that is short hair and fairly petite.

Try your local animal shelter. I’m sure they have many cute, lovable kittens that need a home :)
I bring my my cat to our local shelter once a month for his mani – pedi. It is all I can do to get out without 10 cats in the back seat of my car. I have to tie myself to the mast.
My vet often has kittens to give away. I have the same problem there.
Without a doubt, go to the animal shelter. I have two wonderful cats, both adopted, who I love as much as any I could have found from a breeder. You will spend far less money, will help an animal in need, and will have nothing less by way of companionship.
Your local newspaper will often have free kittens listed under Pets & Livestock.
I listed some incredible Turkish Van kittens there, and they were gone within a week.
Thanks. Suggestions for type I kitten (or mix) I should consider?
Talk to the staff about personalities (kitten’s, not theirs) and then fall in love. Decide before you walk in the door how many you can afford.
I’ve had several cats in my time and somehow it seems to me that the black ones have more smarts that others – I don’t know why, but I would certainly consider one. And, your best bet is your local animal shelter.
Cat-Mart, Catco, Cat Depot, Best Cat, and Cat City all come to mind.
Bed, Cats, and Beyond is also very reputable.
