How do I re-potty train my dogs?

Asked by erincollins (418points) February 16th, 2009

My dogs were all perfectly potty trained and all of a sudden they think is okay to just go in the house. We’re trying to give them treats when they go outside but they mostly just wait by the door for the treat. I almost never see them do it in the house so i can’t really scold them for it. Any suggestions?

well. when we needed to potty train my dog, i would show her how to do it. which means, go outside in the backyard and do it like she should. To Clarify, My family owns a rather large field and the neighbor is atleast a mile away. after about a week she got the picture and did it on her own…

(this method may not be suitable for everyone please check with your local law enforcement regarding public urination)

How many are there? Are they desexed? Could be urinary tract infections? Are they male or female?

I would scold them when you find the accident. If you show them and yell a little, I reckon they are smart enough to know what you are going on about, mine certainly do. If they don’t know you are upset, why should they stop!

Can you do that?

Sudden changes in elimination habits should always be checked for medical issues. You didn’t specify, but I’m assuming that you’re talking about urination. Urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and other issues need to be eliminated as possibilities before you start scolding a dog for misbehaving. Preferably, you should make an appointment to have them checked. If you’re trying to save costs, take a urine sample from each dog into the vet to be checked to see which one may have the problem and then get that dog in to the vet.

If you eliminate medical problems, then behavioral is your next guess. Start from scratch. Don’t give them treats for asking to go outside, sitting by the door, or going outside – give treats for using the bathroom outside. Take them out on a leash every couple of hours (one at a time) and give profuse praise and treats when they potty. The reason for the leash is that you need to be near when they use the bathroom – if they’re outside running loose, you can’t reward them when they go. Dogs are very literal. They cannot correlate getting a treat by the door with peeing outside in the yard. Be consistent. Be persistent. Once they reach the stage of automatically peeing and pooping outside, you can start letting them out on their own.

Are they crate trained? When mine regressed, I went back to leaving them in the crate while I was away and letting them out to go as soon as I was home. (The same way they were housebroken to begin with). It didn’t take long.

@rooeytoo there are three of them 3yr old chihuahua male fixed, 2yr old chihuahua female not fixed, and a 9 month old pitbull female not fixed.
I should also mention that they are not just going #1. Just this morning i found 3 #2 and they did not give any indication (whining) that they needed to go out.

@syz Thanks for the great advice and yes they are doing both inside not just peeing.

Just….redo what you did in the first place. Sometimes they’re just like kids. They’re gonna test you to see if the rules have changed. I’d rub their noses in it and put them outside. When you have more than one dog, it’s tough because you don’t know which dog to target! You could do all three, or rotate, because it isn’t really that traumatic if you get the wrong one (ever got in trouble as a kid for something you didn’t do?:). Also, they already know the rules, so the problem should fix itself pretty quick.
