what songs are representative of city living?
I’m doing a performance about cities soon. I was wondering if anybody had any songs that they think of as being about some part of city life.

“Living for the City” by Stevie Wonder
“One in a Million” Guns n’ Roses
I’m not sure if this is the right relation to a city, but “Big yellow taxi” by Joni Mitchell
Up on the Roof, Drifters.
“I’ll Take Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island too….”
Lullabye of Broadway
The Lake Shore Drive Song by Alliotta Haynes and Jeremiah (about the city of Chicago)...really a great song! Check it out!!!
take A train by Duke Ellington
Another vote for Big Yellow Taxi. Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue and Miles Davis’s Walkin’ also come to mind; and a confession: Billy Joel’s New York State Of Mind.
‘New York, New York, it’s a wonderful town, the Bronx is up and the Battery’s down…...’ From an old musical that I think may have been called “Wonderful Town”
“I left my heart in San Francisco,” – ole blue eyes.
” Charlie & the MTA” Kingston Trio (Boston)
“Fight Fiercely Harvard” Tom Lehrer
Boston Subway Stops song -T Lehrer –
Boston
Chicago songs
“Goodbye City Life” by Deadsoul Tribe
“Lights” by Journey
in a different genre, “For No One” by Zap Mama on the album Sabsylma (in a very blunt way)
“My Kind of Town” F. Sinatra (Chicago)
“Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans” Earl “fatha” Hines
‘Dirty Old Town’ by Ewan McColl, The Pogues. ‘New York,New York’ by Grand Master Flash and the Furious 5. ‘Detroit City’ by Bobby Bare. ‘The Ghetto’ by Donny Hathaway.
‘Across 110th Street’ by Bobby Womack. ‘Chocolate City’ by Parliament.
‘Tenement Yard’ by Jacob Miller. ‘City Scenes’ by The Features. ‘Woman of the Ghetto’ by Marlena Shaw. ‘Streets of Baltimore’ by Gram Parsons. Straight Outta Compton’ by NWA.
‘In the Neighbourhood’ by Sisters Underground. ‘Streets of London’ by Ralph McTell, Anti-nowhere League. ‘Inglan’ is a Bitch’ by Linton Kwesi Johnson. ‘The World is a Ghetto’ by War.
“Big D little a double ll a s” about Dallas… from Frank Loesser’s THE MOST HAPPY FELLA (late 1950s.)
PJ Harvey’s Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea is a very urban album. The song “This Mess We’re In” explicitly mentions New York and is lovely.
