Medical Marijuana Dispensaries: Where are all they now?

Asked by shamroch (111points) February 18th, 2009

I know they are all over California, but I also know that other states have legalized Medical Marijuana. Have dispensaries cropped up anywhere else? How many? Where? Are they starting to appear in places where they previously weren’t? If they haven’t spread outside of CA, why not?

I live in Michigan, which recently passed a medical marijuana bill.

As far as I know, while medical marijuana is now legal in Michigan, it is still illegal on the federal level. Thus, any dispensaries are open to being busted by the DEA.

Unless my understanding is flawed, the medical marijuana law only gives patients a sort of pass to keep marijuana around and not be arrested/fined by Michigan authorities. I also believe the doctor or patient is allowed to personally grow a small amount for medical purposes, but again, they’d probably want to keep it on the down low.

The Michigan rules.

I believe that is identical to the policy in CA, but it hasn’t stopped dispensaries from opening there. I wonder if dispensaries will open soon in Michigan . . .

Most of the California places have been closed down or arein the process of being closed down thanks to the Feds.
In California, the ‘most legal’ way to obtain medical marijuanna is to grow it yourself.

Is it really most? I got the idea it was a few at best. The last I saw there were more now than ever before.

Perhaps it is local to the area I am in, I don’t know.
I know of closures by the Feds in the Bay Area and in Sacramento.
On the other hand, I don’t know if new ones open….

Here is a link to a website which has most dispensaries listed.

While marijuana is still illegal under federal law the U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder, said the Justice Department would not target pot operations following state laws, reducing the risk of random federal raids that existed under the Bush administration.

In other words, if you are following the rules you should be ok
