What is your favorite cover song?
There are great songs, and there are great musicians and sometimes the two overlap each other and a great cover of a great song by a great artist is produced by another band. Which one(s) do you think are tops?

I once heard Sounds of Silence covered by Children of Bodom and it was amazing. I was really surprised but you can tell how reverently it was treated.
Built to Spill doing Cortez the Killer
I typically don’t like covers, and I’m having a hard time coming up with one off the top of my head.
This Hold Steady cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” is good though!

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. It’s eerie, and in a good way.
Sympathy for the Devil—Jane’s Addiction
Dancin’ Days—Stone Temple Pilots
I Will Survive—Cake
Because it make me laugh, this one.
I really like A Perfect Circle but they did a cover of John Lennon’s Imagine that somebody should get punched in the dick for.
1. It Makes No Difference sung by My Morning Jacket (originally by The Band
2. Loving Cup performed by Phish (originally by The Rolling Stones)
3. Lets Dance sung by M.Ward (originally a David Bowie song)
I could go on and on with this question…... and will after I make my rounds
I second Jeff Buckley’s cover of Hallelujah- it’s hauntingly beautiful. One of my other favorites is Cat Power’s slow, sparing, sad cover of I Found a Reason by the Velvet Underground
A few other of my favorites…
I Often Dream of Trains – Firewater
Diamonds and Rust – Judas Priest
I would have to say…
All Along The Watchtower – The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Take On Me – Reel Big Fish
The Black Crowes version of “Hard to Handle” is pretty fun too.
I don’t know, Paul Anka should have covered Kris Kross’ Jump too!
@kevbo thanks for not putting Phish instead of The Gourds, which is a huge misconception and awesome Uncle Tupelo song!! I love Jeff Tweedy!!
Jake Shimabukuro (a wonderful ukelele player) also does a great version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Oh, I really like the Nirvana Unplugged cover of “Lake of Fire”. I’m pretty sure it was the Meatpuppets originally.
Bob Dylan is by far the most covered artist of all time and here are some of my favorites covers of his:
Just Like a Woman Richie Havens
Maggie’s Farm Rage Against the Machine
I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight Norah Jones
One More Cup of Coffee White Stripes
Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door Guns N’ Roses
When I Paint My Masterpiece Grateful Dead
And other favs:
Statesboro Blues The Allman Brothers Band
You Shook Me Led Zeppelin
Crossroads Cream
Respect Aretha Franklin
Hound Dog Elvis Presley
With A Little Help From My Friends Joe Cocker
Alabama Song The Doors
China Girl David Bowie
Hard to Handle The Black Crowes
Little Wing SRV
Take Me to the River Talking Heads
The Man Who Sold the World Nirvana
@tennesseejac
Any chance you have a link to TWS covering “One More Cup of Coffee”?
Also, I’d throw most of Across the Universe in there.
I like a lot of R&B Beatles covers:
Eleanor Rigby – Ray Charles
We Can Work It Out – Stevie Wonder
Got To Get You Into My Life – Earth, Wind & Fire
Blackbird – Billy Preston
Day Tripper – Jimi Hendrix
I Want To Hold Your Hand – Lakeside
Hey Jude – Wilson Pickett
OH! Back in the late 80s, The Staple Singers did a cover of Talking Heads’ Slippery People that I like a lot.
Heard It Through The Grapevine – CCR
I Fought The Law – The Clash
Cocaine – Eric Clapton
“You’re Still The One” AND “My Heart Will Go On” by New Found Glory
Comfortably Numb done by Dar Williams
and Sweet Dreams done by Marilyn Manson <<<this may actually be my favorite cover ever.
You guys.
Hurt and Personal Jesus?
As in Johnny Cash made them his own so hard that both Trent Reznor and Martin Gore squeaked ‘uncle’?
Yeah.
Idk if this counts as a remix or a cover but “right round” by flo rida is a good one.
Herbie Hancock’s (and other artists’) renditions of the Joni Mitchell songs on River: The Joni Letters.
And just about any tune covered by John Pizzarelli or Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks.
Halifax did an awesome cover of Paula Abdul’s Straight Up.
Virgos Merlot did a great cover of Til Tuesday’s Voices Carry.
In no particular order:
Manfred Mann’s Earth Band covered “Blinded by the Light” by Bruce Springsteen.
Vanilla Fudge cover of Lennon/McCartney’s “Eleanor Rigby”
Eric Clapton’s cover of the Robert Johnson tunes on “Me and Mr. Johnson
Annie Lennox cover of “Whiter Shade of Pale” by Gary Brooker and Keith Reid of Procol Harum
The Byrds cover of “Mr. Tambourine Man” by Bob Dylan
Warren Zevon cover of “Back in the High Life Again” by Steve Winwood
The Who included a cover of “Eyesight to the Blind” by Sonny Boy Williamson in “Tommy”
A couple by Elvis Presley, not Costello: “Blue Suede Shoes” by Carl Perkins; “Hound Dog” by Big Mama Thornton;
Santana cover of “Oye Como Va” by Tito Puente
BTW, does anyone know who does the cover of “Space Oddity” on the Lincoln commercials?
For my anti-computer friend Erik…
21st Century Schizoid Man by April Wine (original by King Crimson)
From the Court of the Crimson King. Great album.
@steelmarket…Erik says, “Yes it is. I tend to get a little Sleepless over it.”
Ohhh i forgot one of my favorites
Hotel California – Gipsy Kings seriously its like 10 times better than the original :)
i think kokomo redone by ben kweller and adam green is wonderful.
and um. get your money is the funniest cover i’ve ever heard. say anything doing an ol dirty bastard song? it’s hilarious. even if you don’t listen to say anything, i recommend listening to it for giggles.
I really like “Man of Constant Sorrow” by Osaka Popstar, and “Only Make Believe” by the Misfits.
Came to say the same about Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” and “Personal Jesus.”
When I first heard “Hurt” from behind the wheel of my car I got chills.
I just found this awesome band Postmodern Jukebox . They cover a lot of pop music in a 40’s style.
I find it amazing when a band can cover a song I fucking hate, such as the one above, and make it into something I can’t get enough of
@SecondHandStoke I actually heard the audio version first and thought it was a pretty great cover, then I saw the video and just laughed hysterically :P
@SecondHandStoke I actually posted the Billie Jean cover on March 7th 2009 :P
When I saw Rammstein(holy fuckin amazing concert) they played Stripped :)
