Theme! Theme! Theme!

You can always go with Hollywood or classic Hollywood or something that still gives a huge range (because what hasn’t been made into a movie yet?) but also gives easy decorating schemes and generally keeps it clean.

Do a black and white Theme party. I have been to plenty of them and they always turn out good!

What about a masquerade? Masks are always fun.

I agree, vintage Hollywood would be fantastic. You could go as Gene Wilder!

@essieness – I love the sparkles and feathers :)

Do you mean American fancy dress or British fancy dress? Because in America, British fancy dress is a “costume party”.

If you mean British, you could have cartoon characters as a theme. Or Hollywood, if you want to make it a little more sophisticated (just don’t invite Harry!).

If you mean American, then the Fitzgerald/Gatsby idea is great.

Venetian masks with a black and white theme.

Back in 1966, Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball at the Plaza Hotel set the standard for fancy parties for years to come – both kinds. Granted, he was an arriviste, and later sold out his rich BFFs, but at the time he was so charming he got all the “right people” clamoring to be in his circle.

One could only wear white or black, so these richies tried to outdo each other in their outfits. The limitations of color gave the partygoers a different freedom. And everyone wore masks, the gorgeous kind as in the 18th century.

I second or third the black and white party!

It offers the most flexibility and simplicity for budgets and body types. Most women already have a black dress in their closet that they can dress up with funky jewelry, feathers, sparkles etc, for the party. People who like to shop vintage can also find some amazing old dresses at thrift stores too. Reigning it in to black/white or both ensures that it will look classy enough for your family.
