Are you a Rescue?

Asked by Dog (25152points) February 19th, 2009

When we adopt pets we usually chose rescues- and often times they seem to have a profound appreciation of even the simplest comforts and attention.

When thinking on this I realized that in many ways I am a rescue. That my past has given me an acute appreciation for some things that I used to take for granted.

Are you a rescue? Have experiences in life made you truly appreciate anything?

What do you appreciate and why?

What a wonderful question!

My pets are rescues, as am I.

Cancer has been my great equalizer. So have my children and my husband. All the things I thought I was, my family and cancer have taught me differently. Frankly, I’m a better person now, than I was before. I do appreciate the smallest things in life.

Thank you for asking this, it brought a smile to my face.

I am not a rescue but many of my pets are and have been. I also think that being the rescuer and seeing the rescuees gratitude makes you also appreciate life a little bit more too. :-)

I am not a rescue. I have always had enough to eat and a nice den to sleep in, and I have never run stray. However, all of my animals are rescues. Some we obtained from shelters. Some found us on their own. Two were our foster dogs, rescued from the aftermath of Katrina, but we never found their people so they stayed with us.

My husband is a rescue – he was a widower when I met him and spent all his time when not at work sitting like a lump in front of the television, convinced no one would ever love him again. He was wrong, of course.

And our children are both adopted, so I guess you could describe them as rescues also.

In some ways I guess I am a rescue and in some ways I am not.

I am not in the sense that Darwin described. I have always had a roof over my head, plenty to eat, and clothes to wear.

I am a rescue in the sense that when someone loves me exactly as I am I tend to be shocked and amazed and lap it up like a stray dog might lap up water.

My life experiences have made me appreciate what it is to be a mother, what it is to be truly and unconditionally loved by someone you love in return, and still being alive and well in my 40’s.

I am definitely a rescue. I grew up quite poor, sexually abused, with a mother who did nothing to stop the abuse. Until very recently, I had let my experiences keep me from fully depending on anyone. Fully trusting anyone. My second husband has changed all that. I feel safe for the first time in my life.

I don’t know if you can attribute your own body to being a rescuer for yourself but that is kind of the way it was for me. I took my health for granted for a long time with bad eating habits and no exercise and I contracted diabetes in 2006 because of that.

Since that time, I’ve come to sincerely appreciate what being healthy is all about and how much better I feel and how much more I enjoy life now that I’m taking good care of myself.

Life and health are both precious but they can be delicate and fragile also and it’s something that no one should ever take for granted. It’s too important.

I don’t know that I’d liken me to a rescue, but you could say I’m something of a stray that found a suitable home. I feel like this every time I think “he gets me”.

Yeah- I am a total rescue. I appreciate anything that goes right when there is a possibility of it going wrong. I am thankful for peace and when people go out of their way to obtain it.
I am so thankful for a family that puts up with me and loves me as I am.
