Are all fat people lazy?

Asked by russ_utsa (19points) February 20th, 2009

When I say fat, I mean atleast 75lbs overweight…This seems to be a stereotype put on obese people, and I have yet to meet someone considerably overweight that I wouldn’t call lazy.

Not all. Some, yes. Some skinny people are lazy too.

essieness's avatar

Maybe the laziness is a symptom of being overweight? What I mean is, you see the fat lady in the motorized cart at the store: Is she lazy and therefore fat? Or fat and therefore can’t walk? It might be a chicken and egg scenario.

Are all rude questions stupid?

I am from Louisiana that has the most obese citizens than anywhere else around the world. Not all “over weight” people are lazy.Some work out more than super models just to look like a tooth pick because they are constantly teased about their weight. Just because they aren`t 1 oz. doesn`t mean that they are “fat” some people have troubles controling their weight.

scamp's avatar

@russ_utsa duck!! You’re about to get yourself in a whole lot of trouble with this question.

@scamp thank you i agree 100%

Isn’t the point of Fluther to intellectually debate topics without taking personal offense to said subjects? Or maybe I’m in the wrong place.

onesecondregrets's avatar

No. A woman I work with is overweight, by 75 lbs or more. She has a serious thyroid problem which caused her to gain a huge amount of weight.

A_Beaverhausen's avatar

this is an odd query.

russ_utsa's avatar

Maybe I didn’t word it the best… but what I mean is for example I have never seen a person considerably overweight jogging with their dog in the park. Is this something that comes with being overweight, a lack of interest in strenuous activity?

Darwin's avatar

@russ_utsa – The reason you won’t see “a person considerably overweight jogging with their dog in the park” is very simple: the mechanics of the body make this a very unwise choice of behavior. The excess weight can cause injury to legs, feet and hips unless the weight is first lost through low-impact exercise, which can be just as strenuous as jogging. Check out a water aerobics class and you will see.

BTW, many professional football players are in fact obese (especially the big guys who squash people). Do you consider them lazy?

And then there is this recent research:

“Roehling and his team studied the relationship between body weight and personality traits for nearly 3,500 adults. And they found that contrary to widely held stereotypes, overweight and obese adults were not significantly less conscientious, less agreeable, less extroverted or less emotionally stable.” ( http://www.medindia.net/news/They-Aint-Fat-and-Lazy-Obese-Employees-also-Work-Hard-39550-1.htm )

In addition, being morbidly obese is not caused by just one thing in isolation such as laziness:

“Being seriously overweight is not caused by one single factor. There are a number of things that may interact and contribute to one becoming morbidly obese… These include:

* Genetics
* Culture
* Physical inactivity
* Emotional or psychological factors
* Gender
* Age
* High-fat / High Calorie diet
* Medical problems”

( http://www.stvincent.org/ourservices/bariatrics/about/causes/default.htm )

You need to rethink your sample size and broaden your horizons.

No!!! You either don’t get around much or you don’t choose to notice and I think your generalization is rather offensive.

arnbev959's avatar

Lack of ability for jogging with their dog in the park maybe, not necessarily lack of interest. In most cases probably a keen interest and desire for that ability.

charliecompany34's avatar

i have a diabetic father-in-law who could, yeah, lose some weight, but he is not at all lazy.

SuperMouse's avatar

No, all fat people are not lazy. Are all skinny people stupid? Are all blond people cheerful? Are all big nosed people hard of hearing?

I am football player sized (6’ 270lbs.). According to my doctor, I should be about 200lbs.

I can work on my feet for 8–10 hours solid. I work 55 hours a week at two jobs. I jog up the stairs – can lift heavy objects easily. I’ll mop floors, scrub toilets, fold clothes and whatever else needs to get done around the house.

So…no. Not really.

scamp's avatar

Aww, c’mon Allie! I just asked a question same as he did!!

ok I’ll be good now, promise. I still lurve ya!!

I know of some obese folk who are more active than I am so no- I do not think fat people are lazy. I also know of one gal who did not know she had severe anemia and gained a good deal of weight. Once she had her iron levels back up the weight and energy levels normalized.

What I am getting at here is this- the old saying “don’t judge a person unless you have walked a mile in their shoes” is true. Do not make broad assumptions about a person on appearance.

When it comes down to it we all have our own illness or demons, issues & addictions. Life leaves none unscathed.

Blondesjon's avatar

@essieness…If you think human beings are capable of intellectually debating topics without taking offense at said topics every now and then you are in the right place. You’re just a bit naive.

Before you get defensive, how would you have reacted to a question like, “Are blacks really human?” or “Aren’t women really just sperm banks?”

This particular thread just didn’t push the button on you that it did on some others.

I would also like to add that I will defend to the death russ utsa’s right to ask offensive questions and my right to label them as I see fit.

scamp's avatar

@Blondesjon You are my hero today!

Darwin's avatar

@Blondesjon – Isn’t it the men who are sperm banks? Women put it to use right away or discard it. Guys keep making more, sort of like the government printing money all the time.

Blondesjon's avatar

@Darwin…I humbly stand corrected and full of baby batter.

Hey, did I just get moderated?

@Darwin – “Guys keep making more, sort of like the government printing money all the time.”

Thereby causing inflation? :D

scamp's avatar

@Darwin I think @Blondesjon got it right the first time. After all they do make the um err deposits and withdrawals. And as the reciever of such women would be the banks!

mij's avatar

Hey c’mon now, if you were overweight would you like being called fat.
Some people have weight problems and I’m sure they are no more lazy than the rest of us.
I just don’t like the use of the word fat to refer to overweight people.

Cardinal's avatar

Absolutely not! I have a close friend who is a orthopedic RN, which is a tough nursing job in any ones book. She is very heavy, but can out work all the slimer/younger RN’s on the floor. (and this a rather dumb question!)

FiRE_MaN's avatar

NO! being fat doesnt mean you are lazy!! Have you seen sumo wrestilers?! or for a better example for those who havent a lineman on a football team? im talking about those 6 foot 5 guys who weight 300 or 400 pounds and can still out run me.. and i play 4 sports all varsity except for one. im not sure if sumos can but they are not lazy at all and are incredibly strong.

discover's avatar

I think its the other way round/

Fat people tend to be lazy because it is very difficult for them to move around, do things, ......they get tired easily

Make a fat person thin and see how active he/she becomes

madcapper's avatar

I’m lazy as shit and I think the answer is yes. While I am not 75 lbs over weight I could def stand to lose a pound or 40…

Henry Knox was tubby but he would always march with the soldiers.

lisaj89's avatar

No, and I know that from experience. I exercise regularly and am overweight. Up until a few months ago I could not figure out why this was until my doctor told me I have a condition, not diabetes, which makes me partially resistant to insulin. Now that I know what to stay away from, the exercise I have always done seems to be melting away the lbs. So think about this the next time you judge somebody b/c of their weight. Their problem may be medical and they may not even know it. The answer to the question is no, many overweight people live just as active, if not more active lives than many thin people.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Fact from fiction, truth from diction. I do not believe every fat person to be lazy, or the majority in general. What I do believe is that they are not active enough to counteract all they are eating. It is not rocket science of you empty anything faster than whatever is going in sooner than later it will run dry. Fat people are way too sedimentary to burn off all the calories they take in. In a sense they are too lazy to burn off the unused calories even though they may enjoy activities like bowling, softball etc as much as their weight will allow them to .

Strauss's avatar

Not all fat people are lazy, nor all lazy people fat!

desiree333's avatar

I am fat, maybe not quite as fat as the description asks, but still. Here is my experience (this is still a current issue for me). I developed depression and my self esteem plummeted. Being overweight was the solution to my despair, in a sense. You see, when a person is so unhappy that they have no motivation to get out of bed, pleasure is lost in everything that you do (anhedonia).

The only inclination in life was ending it, not repairing it. Therefore, I became fat. Food was the only comfort in my life…I know how pathetic it is. When you don’t even want to live anymore, how could there be motivation to take care of yourself?
