Why are people testy with other's mistakes?

Asked by joli (633points) October 14th, 2007

Impatience and annoyance seem to be prevalent in our society. What happend to patience and understanding and space to be unique? Not everyone can be a whiz at life.

As much as I love to blame modern culture for everything, this is nothing new. Candide by Voltaire is an excellent example of impatience with mistakes or differences. As this appears in literature across time and cultures, I can only conclude it is a trait common to humanity.

I agree with Joli, I feel that the Fluther community was much more patient and accepting and helpful with answering questions whether simple or not before the site grew. I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing Fluther is growing every day, just that the atmosphere of the site is becoming more hostile and I’ve been seeing a lot more people exhibiting frustration when they find other peoples’ questions “stupid” or easy to find on Google.

i never admonish someone for not using google before they post! it gives me an opportunity to look smart simply by being good at basic research…

Society is more complicated than it has ever been, and many more things are time-sensitive than they used to be. It’s also much more evident when someone is not quite as proficient at something as they should be. So the combination of people using technology they’re not very good at, and more people being impatient (and used to instant gratification) produces a lot more sniping and impatient attitudes than in days gone by.

I blame halo. and modern warfare 2. and the consequences our instant gratification society has placed on future generations. only the strong survive.
