Uh oh. I just ate almost a whole plate of month-old Indian food by accident. How screwed am I?

Note to self: don’t put the NEW leftovers on top of the leftovers that have been hiding away for a long time.
Yes, the chana masala did taste funny, but I figured it was a bad batch. Am I screwed? At least it wasn’t meat.

I would stick my finger down my throat STAT.
Your ass is about to literally explode. LITERALLY. get some good reading material and some water.
Wow. I just hope that Ben’s up to the task of running this site by himself.
R.I.P., Andrew.
I think we can start the countdown 5–4-3–2-1 Grab the bucket! There, isn’t that better. You should probably put some new reading material in the loo, it’s going to be a long night.
I suppose this will really be a test of my constitution, right?
How long do I have before the world of hurt begins?
I just ate some eight month old (at least) mar whatever chicken out of my freezer.
@steve6 Freezer is totally different.
@andrew I’d say about a day-ish? I still think you have time to make yourself puke.
@steve6 out of the freezer is a lot different than out of the fridge.
@andrew depends on how bad it was, and how much you already had in there. yeah, i’d say within the next day.
Get some ipecac and save yourself! Puke that stuff out!
Don’t actually take ipecac, i hear it’s bad for you.
you’re not sick yet? then you’re OK.
Man, food poisoning sucks – I just thought I’d put that out there.
But yeah, you might wanna take all of the suggestions that are slightly leaning towards purging. :D
Good luck.
@steve6 You could be right, though food poisoning can sometimes take a few hours.
maybe eat some yogurt, and drink a lot of water.
yogurt is good for digestion.
@eponymoushipster : Not if the yogurt might be a month old to.
Purge, thyself and the fridge
@KingMalefic i thought that was a given, but yes, don’t eat old yogurt. I’ve done that. It was peach, and it was fizzy, like champagne, because it was fermenting. did not end well.
If you do consume anything, drink a lot of tea with ginger and honey and eat a lot of toast with a smidgen of butter, if you like. Anything else can disrupt the digestive system and cause even more puke/shit.
You know this situation reminds me of this cooking show I saw once where the host explained it’s best to place leftovers in tuperware containers with the date the food was put in written on them, and I remember thinking that suggestion required far too much work for leftovers.
Now I see her point.
Month old? Ouch.
INDIAN? Quadruple ouch.
You are going to be spending some quality time with the porcelain throne, oh baby oh baby.
Serious note: DO NOT involve ipecac, that would make this situation 10x more dangerous.
Andrew – I took an 1/8 teaspoon taste of some canned homemade chutney a couple years ago. This was a vacuum-sealed canning jar, a year old. It didn’t taste off, but it didn’t taste appetizing either, so I tossed it. Within minutes, I was dizzy and nauseous. I can easily say the next 48 hours were the sickest I’ve been in my life.
Fingers crossed for you, my friend.
This all reminds me I have tupperware in the fridge with curry with chicken i made over a month ago. it needs to be discarded. (thankfully, it’s that semi-disposable ziplock tupperware)
if it makes you feel better @andrew, in these situations, my grandmother used to give me suppositories. it could be worse.
If you’re not violently sick within a half-hour, you haven’t been poisoned.
@zack Where you’d here that shit?
Drink a lot of water and cranberry juice. You’ll be fine. If you keep thinking about it, you’ll probably just psych yourself out.
I have experience with egg salad that indicates the onset of symptoms may arise up to 4 hours later
@steve6 That’s what my mom said whenever I had a tummy ache.
As long as whatever I have will be clearing up in the next 14 hours, I’ll be happy. I have a doctor’s appointment in the morning that I don’t want to spoil.
Just promise if you go down sick the site won’t follow.
Godspeed.
I once thought it was okay to leave cream cheese in a butter dish at room temperature for a few days. What happened after eating some of it I’d rather not go into. It was quite possibly the worst 24 hours of my life. You have my sympathies.
Poor Andrew! Hope it’s not as bad as everyone is predicting.
Drink lots of high proof liquor. Maybe the alcohol will kill some of the bacteria or you at least drink enough to puke it out.
You have enough time to make sure your bathrooms are as clean as you want them to be, for the amount of time you might be spending in them!
good way to remember to throw out the leftovers!
Hope it doesn’t happen – or if it does, it’s a very mild case!
If it wasn’t fuzzy, didn’t smell funny and your refrigerator is cold enough, you may have dodged a bullet. For some reason, food stays fresh a long time in the current refrigerator I own.
Let us know.
@AlfredaPrufrock: Definitely looked and tasted off. But, over an hour later, no problems so far.
Good luck Andrew! Hopefully this will just pass (for lack of a better word) without too much suffering!
Funny @buster if he follows your advice he will be cured of what he is suffering from but suffering from the cure.
@Andrew- may you dodge the bullet. What else is in your fridge?
Andrew. No need to make yourself vomit. You are unlikely to get sick. However, if you do, the most likely scenario is that you will be ill from either Staph aureus or Bacillus cereus food poisoning. Both types tend to occur 4–6 hours after ingesting the contaminated food, with primarily vomiting but also diarrhea. Both are self-limiting, and resolve within 24 hours. As has been said above, your best bet is to maintain good hydration with water or, my favorite (even for adults), pedialyte.
@shilolo Mmmmm… pedialyte! Love it!
It’s been 6 hours and nothing. I think the fact that it was vegetarian may have saved me. Here’s to sleeping through the night.
Hope you made it through o.k., Andrew.
One thing to remember about Indian food is taht the spices were added to preserve it in a hot climate without refrigeration so it may actually last longer than some other cusisines.
It most definitely has to come out one end… most likely burning… run for the potty!
@Andrew- glad to hear you are okay.
Andrew lives another day! Huzzah!
Please keep us updated, Andrew!
Oh gross. I hope you’re still feeling ok. I’m so weird about stuff like that I would have started to vomit just from the thought of my food being that old.
Ask Scamp, I’m very strict about dates.
@janbb That’s exactly what I was thinking.
Made it through the night! Hooray!
I think you’re probably in the clear then, Andrew, and maybe the Indian food hypothesis is true.
Wow. I’d like to thank Andrew. His plight just saved me the $6 I was going to spend on lunch today; I no longer have an appetite. My wallet and waistline thank you too.
glad to hear you’re okay. Invest in a Sharpie and some masking tape to keep in your kitchen, mister! :)
I hope you have learned your lesson, young man… clean out the fridge!
Glad you’re ok!
So what have we learned? I think the message here clear. It’s okay to eat rotten Indian food. I’m going to go have those month old Jaipur vegetables from my fridge right now.
what? you are fine, with no reaction? gee. what a surprise. cough i told you so cough.
[Mod says] Please keep to the topic. Self-congratulatory “I told you so’s” are gross violations of the Fluther guidelines. Don’t let it happen again!
[Not Mod Says] PnL already knows that nobody listens to her. It should be against the rules for her to try and prove otherwise.~
hmph. manager >>> moderator.
[Awesome guy says] awesome.
[Mod says:] In all fairness, she was right. He’s alive and fine. (Some people are such cry babies. :p)
I had to check in to be sure Andrew is ok! I am very glad to hear you made it through the night, I hope you are still hanging in there!
Ever been to Mexico? It should feel similar.
Jk, glad your butt didn’t explode.
@asmonet: I’ve had food poisoning proper, and I’ve gotten horribly sick when I was in Guatemala, so I know what you’re talking about.
@andrew glad you survived.
I intentionally ate week-old Indian (mutter paneer) in a moment of extreme hunger/laziness and it didn’t kill me. Maybe we’ve discovered something new about Indian food? Bacteria stay away from the spicy. Or something.
I don’t know about anti-bacterial properties, but spicy Indian food is suspected to reduce risk of Alzheimers.
@andrew: So this is like a hobby for you? ;)
Was there meat in the indian food? If not it may just make you have some really bad pooooo if it did it could mean you may end up with food poisoning and that could be pretty nasty where you may need a trip to the hospital. Throwing it up is probably not going to help you because the bacteria is already in there spreading like wildfire. At bare minimum plan a night in the bathroom, there is a possibility it could come out of both ends but if you already ate it and it hasn’t started to make you throw it up I am going to say its come out the bottom. Good luck hope all isn’t too painful coming out.
Well, since this was from two years ago I assume he’s either killed or cured by now.
ooop didn’t see the date lol
Poor ‘ol Andrew. He will be missed. :’(
Alas poor Andrew – we knew him well.
