How do I get rid of some junk on iMac like an ancient Int. Explorer?

Asked by gailcalled (54647points) February 23rd, 2009

It popped up recently, from who knows where, and appears as my browser when I restart the iMac. I’m getting Leopard next week, but don’t want this old gal to die on me. Everything is getting slower and when I wake it up from sleep mode, there is a brief hum. When I click on a link, I get two windows, also.

Which version of OS X are you running now? I can offer you some tips, but I’m feeling a bit too lazy for “If you’re running Tiger, do this. If you’re running Panther, do this.”

(Although, when you install Leopard, that will probably solve the problem.)

I am running Tiger; with the ultimate upgrade.10.4.11. (OS 9 is lurking in there somewhere but I haven’t used IE for years.)

Due to Mac issues, I am purchasing a new computer with Leopard already installed. This old thing with one chip and under 800MB ram cannot support Leopard. So it is really for my education, if you have the time

I gather that jp was having me on; I didn’t pay much attention due to what looked like code.

If you fire up Safari, you can go to the General tab and choose your default web browser.

Also, you can go to the Spotlight magnifying glass in the upper right corner, search for Internet Explorer, and throw all the copies of it you find away. MSIE shipped with Jaguar and I think with Panther, so if you upgraded from one of those to Tiger you might have it hanging around. It was obsolete even then, though, and unless you’re actually using MSIE for something, you should be safe to delete it.
