I think the bad rap is undeserved. I know many fully functional and successful lifetime stoners. I’m one myself. This isn’t bragging, but at my current age I’m the most successful career-wise in my extended group of friends and also the person who smokes the most weed.
I’m almost too lazy to respond to this, but no.
Personally I’ve never met a pot smoker who I’d trust my wallet with.. luckily all I have in my wallet is my two cents.
But lazy? I don’t know.. the ones I’ve worked with haven’t been dependable .. but when they did work I suppose it was ok.
Ha the problem is people are just lazy in general. Whether they smoke pot or not doesn’t seem to matter. The thing is that a lot of people who fall into any substance abuse tend to find themselves in a life void of ambition and accomplishments. Whether its pot, alcohol, cocaine, and yes even people who are addicted to WoW!
It depends on the people. I stopped hanging round with my best friends because all they ever did was smoke pot. I’d join in every once in a while, but I had better things to do than smoke u in my friends room 5 nights a week, and watch youtube videos.
There are some out there who validate this stereotype (I have a few friends who fit the bill), but for the most part, pot smokers are just as productive as everyone else.
I think that peope that smoke pot can get so consumed with it that its all they want to do. Thats what happened to some of my friends. At first they were able to fuction properly but then they got to into and all of their ambitions were lost and they just wanted to sit around and smoke weed. So I dont like the way that weed controls peoples lives.
@LKidKyle1985 That’s my take on it too. As long as you do something in moderation and know your limits you can be a normal productive member of society.
I look at like alcohol. I know a person who drinks constantly and the next day doesn’t function well because of the hangover (appearing to be lazy). While a friend who has a 3.7 GPA and maintains it well who also smokes pot.
It’s all about control and moderation.
It’s likely that the majority of nonsmokers see smokers as lazy, while smokers see the “non-partaking” as shallow. Smokers are known to spend their time sitting on the couch, living inside their own heads, appearing to be accomplishers of nothing; However, those smokers often see the sober as mindless drones who travel down stream, floating on the surface, never understanding, never questioning what society prescribes them. As with any lifestyle choice, it’s a matter of perspective as well as of the individual.
Its hard as a smoker i guess to see this as something that makes me lazy/unmotivated though i will admit that when i started smoking it was light, maybe only with friends on occasion, which turned into a everyday even alone habit.
It has made me say “ehhhh, fuck it” to somethings that i probably shouldnt have, but then again i cant blame a substance when it was my own ignorance that made me do it.
When i think about marijuana use though i do see some positives. Before i stopped working to go back to college, i still smoked and worked at a government job with no problems at all. I had shifts from 2pm-10pm monitoring highways and working with police and other agencies, never had a write up at work, was late one time. I would smoke weed after work to wind down, watch a movie with some friends or to put me to sleep.
I agree its all about the person, how they handle it and how they live. Though i do like my grade A papers ive gotten back, that have mostly been written stoned.
I think the smokers who lay around all day on the couch watching the Discovery Channel (Planet Earth is kick ass) were already predesposed to be lazy. The smoking just enhances the laziness.
And makes Planet Earth kick that much more ass.
Weeeeel let me tell you….....ach…. screw it….
You don’t need weed to be lazy and unproductive. Trust me, I know.
Some are and some aren’t. It’s like anyone else.
@Triiiple
Yes, I love watching Planet Earth high! Much lurve to you!
Only after smoking. I smoke occassionally and I have an MA and a full time job.
Lazy people give pot smokers a bad name. I could easily say that a person who gets off of work and sits down at a bar for the evening is lazy.
Sunrise Earth is also awesome to watch high.
Now I’m just kind of going on a tangent and not really answering the question any more, so I apologize for that, but while we’re on the topic of Discovery Channel shows, Time Warp is also cool to watch when you’re in the right mood. And Man vs. Wild is just awesome in general.
@TenaciousDenny I was also about to send some lurve until i saw the Man Vs Wild…he is a big fat fake. Now Survivor Man, thats a good show! But Time Warp is also pretty bad ass, so is this new show (not sure if its on Discovery) with the escape artist bald guy.
@Triiiple Sure it was a little disappointing when that stuff about Bear Grylls came out, but I still love the show, and Bear is still the man. You can’t fake some of the stuff he does on the show (eating random animals raw, scaling huge cliffs, drinking his own urine, parachuting into these random locations, going deeper into caves than I’d ever care to go). Ok, maybe some of these are just plain crazy and not badass, but still, it’s good TV.
The Escape Artist show (which is on the Discovery Channel) did intrigue me, but I haven’t gotten the chance to check it out yet. I’ll be sure to put that on my DVR list.
@Pol_is_aware I really like your answer and agree with you wholeheartedly.
I think the idea of potsmokers being lazy isn’t completely unfounded, but I think it might be a chicken and egg question, actually. I’m lazy by nature and happen to enjoy smoking pot. I don’t think they really have much to do with each other because I only smoke in the evenings as I’m winding down to go to bed (much like non-smokers might have a glass of wine or a beer to wind down). I’d also like to point out that I’m a completely responsible adult who works full time and works hard, and goes to school full time and has a very high GPA. If I have a day off work and no other responsibilities to take care of, I might smoke during the day. I tend to get a LOT done, actually, when I do that. I agree that younger people might be affected by it more in a negative way (teenagers), but I would say that has more to do with them not understanding how to use marijuana responsibly and like anything teenagers do, they probably tend to go overboard with it.
And to expound on @Pol_is_aware‘s point, while we smokers may appear to be lazy on the outside (while we’re high), believe me, our brains aren’t resting. When I go out into the world as a sober person, I feel like the switch in my mind is turned to off and I’m just running on autopilot to make it through the day. Frankly, most of the people who surround me in daily life are mundane and boring and don’t challenge me intellectually at ALL. However, when I take that first hit from my pipe, I feel that switch turn to on and suddenly my mind is thinking clearly and rationally and deeply. I love to read when I smoke and I enjoy having intellectual conversations with my smoker friends. The best way I can explain it is that when I smoke, my mind slows down just enough to tune out the useless crap floating in from the physical world and the people around me and sharpens up just enough to tune in more acutely to the spiritual/philosophical/intellectual world, much like an x-ray.
Phew, that wore me out. I think I’ll go have a smoke.
“they lie about marijuana. They say pot smoking makes you unmotivated. Lie! When you smoke pot, you can do everything you normally do, just as well, you just realize it’s not worth the fucking effort.”
Bill Hicks
@chris6137 ive seen that quote before, pure genius. Lurve!
oh for chrissake what a stupid fucking question. hey how about if i ask a question like, “do you feel that black people commit too many crimes?” you know, because we should all just generalize groups of people in to one giant categogry. oh, if only the world wasn’t so complex and we could just make everything black and white and say ALL STONERS = LAZY.
do you want to know why “lazy” stoners are always discussed? the dropouts, the fuck ups, and the failures who all “smoked too much dope”? and why we don’t talk about the millions of successful lawyers, doctors, artists and computer engineers who smoked weed and still lived a balanced life?
BECAUSE WE NEVER FUCKING HEAR ABOUT THEM. every time pot is discussed in the media, it’s discussed as a stigmatized issue, but the reality is that almost half of the country smokes weed. i smoke, a lot of hardworking and intelligent fluther members smoke, my parents smoked, shit, even the past 3 presidents of the united states smoked.
so to answer you’re question, no, i don’t feel that marijuana users are lazy/don’t do anything. now if i could ask you, do you think that people who have 2 glasses of wine with dinner sometimes are also lazy and don’t do anything?
@hTownDude i agree with you, but Triiiple wasnt categoriezing us, hes one of us, he was just asking about our view on the bad rep we get o really no need to attack him :)
I almost Volcano’d my bong when i read that jesus. I wasnt attacking stoners at all lol.
@Triiiple I was chuckling too because @hTownDude obviously doesn’t know the Triiiple we all know and love.
