Do you feel a sense of pride being a member of The Collective?

Asked by SuperMouse (30853points) February 25th, 2009

When I read this thread it made me proud to be a member of The Collective. This kid reached out for help and got plenty of thoughtful answers from thoughtful people who all had his best interest at heart. No one made fun of him or told him to go away. Everyone showed class and caring and jumped in with great advice or at least some comfort. What a great bunch! I’m off to vote for Fluther (my daily vote) as the most bitchin website ever!

As a side note, welcome aboard AndyHardy, your find that Fluther is a great place!

I am amazed at the sense of community and genuine caring here on Fluther. Yes, I am proud to be a part of it, however I’d have to say, I am more honored than anything, that I am a part of it. I am honored by those that chose to share their lives with us by sharing their stories, their questions, their advice. (I have also cast my daily vote for Fluther.)

That thread was very inspirational! I received the same kindness my first day here at fluther. I’m proud to call myself a member.

I am proud to be here, but that thread made me nervous. I hope that guy is OK.

The intercourse is more satisfying than 4Chan or Slashdot.

edit :: OK I know that was a bad joke. Why doesn’t my spell check flag 4chan?

We have our moments of brilliance and the occasional display of human foibles, which is just as it should be. I’m here because humanity is damned interesting both in its greatness and its weakness, and Fluther has found the magic formula for accommodating both without letting the dark side take over. Beautiful.

I’ve just read the thread you are referring to – has anyone heard anything from the guy since?

I really do like Fluther. At first, I felt very out of place – just getting used to things. Now, things are comfortable and I really enjoy the people. It’s a great place!

I like it here. It feels somewhat lopsided some days and just right on others; it all depends on the mix of jellies & questions. I will say I am often warmed by the genuine tenderness shown to those in need. It makes me laugh and it’s made me cry, and it always makes me think.

pekenoe's avatar

It’ll be interesting to see if the thread you referred to was someone yanking the collective chain.
Funny how it dropped off real quick when questions started being asked rather than hankies handed out.

Fluther is so sick. You’re part of a community, and there is a genuine sense of belonging here. Sometimes when I tell people about it, they’re like “sounds like it’s just a bunch of losers and creepers pretending to be someone they aren’t so they can chat with other people and get attention.” It’s hard for them to believe that people can come together on the internet and share thoughts and knowledge and help each other out. But we do and it’s awesome!

SuperMouse's avatar

@pekenoe that is a good point, it makes me sad to think that might be the true, but the cynic in me wonders if you might be right.

cak's avatar

@pekenoe – even if that is true, it still shows the good side of people. If that question isn’t a great example, there are so many more ways to show the positive effect of the Collective!

bythebay's avatar

If the poster was yanking chains; at least the collective acted in a way that provoked no unnecessary negativity or flame throwing.

If the poster was authentic; no matter what the end result, they were shown great kindness and compassion here.

That’s why I asked if he’s been on Fluther since…

I voted for Fluther again today. One week to go and everyone can vote everday!

I agree with pekenoe about that other thread. It was hard to tell if that was serious or not, but who knows if someone else in that same boat won’t be doing a Google search one day and get something from the advice.

This thread on the other hand seemed much more real.

I love it when I come in late to a thread, and see that some wonderful Flutherites have already solved the problem. It makes me happy. Go team!
