I have had problems with spotlight forever, lately I cannot get it to stop indexing, i often get results, but just every five minutes it seems to try reindexing and never finishes.
I have tried adding it and removing it via the privacy tab
Using a MBP running 10.5.6
any help appreciated thanks

I’ve heard a suggestion is to delete your index file and then let spotlight start a fresh index. Worth a shot. I’m not entirely sure where that is though…
yes perhaps that will help, I used terminal to kill it once and its been broken ever since.
some stupid blog told me it would have better battery life if I didnt use it. which theorieticaly makes sense, but constantly indexing really kills the battery.
now where is that file…
It is a hidden file at the root of each drive called .Spotlight-V100
.
I would use something like Secrets to show hidden files and delete it that way. I wouldn’t try and do it from the Terminal unless you are very comfortable with the Terminal.
ok, its rebuilding, hopefully that works….
is it going to get corrupted again if i sleep my computer while its indexing? as in i need to pack up and move?
It should be cool. It might not be a bad idea to delete
/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.spotlight.plist
too.
ill try that, it still is broken.
