I'm bad when it comes to remembering faces. What to do?

Asked by Mr_M (7624points) February 28th, 2009

With movies, unless I KNOW the actor, if the character only appears in the beginning of a movie and then only re-apears at the end, someone has to tell me “Oh that’s the guy who… in the beginning of the movie”. Similarly, I am terrible remembering names and linking them with faces. Do you have this problem? What do you do about it?

i doubt you truly have a problem, probably just some minor short term memory loss. you could also have prosopagnosia, otherwise known as being “face blind”. when you are face blind, you have no problem remembering important events, facts, and so on, but your brain just can’t seem to recognize the faces if you try to think about them.

but don’t worry, a lot of people have this condition, it’s really minute, nothing to worry about. there are more important things in life than physical appearance anyway. i guess you’ll just have to make sure that if you watch a new movie or show, you’re always accompanied by someone without “face blindness.”

Thanks for the supporting words. But where it becomes a problem is where I’m trying to relate what someone said at a meeting to someone else. I never remember the name of the person who said the thing.

oh i see. well i really don’t know what to tell you then. i’m not really sure if there is a treatment for your “ailment”, but i’m sure you could look it up. the only thing i could think of off the top of my head would be to write down names and the main ideas of what they said. are you good at drawing? perhaps it’d be nice to keep a small sketchbook. you could write the name of the person, their idea, and a quick sketch of their face. but i suppose that would be rather creepy.

other than this, i know crossword puzzles and mind games can help boost your memory. same with eating spinach and certain other foods. you could start playing those juvenile memory games where the cards have faces on them and you have to remember where they are.

There are many associative techniques that can help to trigger your memory with regard to names & faces. You are not alone!

If you watch the “SAW” series, you’ll understand my problem. I go from one movie to the next and say “Who the hell is THAT?”

I have this same problem. Some people truely think I’m being an asshole when I can’t remember them. I just let them think that. I can take apart or put together anything but I do have a hard time remembering people’s names (famous or people I’ve met).

I don’t really think it’s a problem. You remember the people’s names that matter. A name is just a word and it somehow seems unimportant in the big scheme of things.

Check this out and see if anything helps. It’s a friend’s journal about faceblindness.
