White Blood Cell's?

Asked by Gem (1points) February 28th, 2009

I have lived with my white blood cell count being high ever since i was in my 20’s,I’am now in my 40’s,and my health has not been good for year’s.Doctor’s just tell me they cannnot find out why my white blood cell count is so high. And leave me to have to do what i can for my self,so that is what i have tried to do by useing herbal remedies ect..I have blurry vision at time’s—feel nausa at time’s—stiff neck, cannot turn it hardly, fever that come’s & goes, major sinus condition which developed in my early 30’s.I know the sinus problem is much more than a regular sinus problem, but doctor’s refuse to look into this further to see the other causes for my symptom’s.I just got out of the hospital the 20th,I was in 8 day’s with pneumonia, again they told me they could not find out why my white blood cell count was too high.I got my medical record’s and they did not place anything about my white blood cell count on my record’s about my white blood cell’s being too high..Infact they had white washed my record’s it seemed, because there was other issues i had in the hospital not listed. Now i’am not a doctor but i know something is really wrong when you live with high white blood cell count for over 20 year’s & suffer with health problem’s like i have,There just seem’s to be more doctor’s being a doctor for the money and not for the real concern for the person. There are some that really are.But i have went to a few over the year’s,and it seem’s they just refuse to really check a medical condition out properly..the pain in my neck is more so toward the left back side of my neck,to the base of my head area,I have had a lot of weakness, bright sunlight or Bright light’s bother my eye’s,I have had confusion that i should not normaly have at all,and other symptom’s.I would like to know what type of doctor do i need to see? that will really check me correctly and not just throw me some more antibiotics,or if you can tell me what my symptom’s sound like,That may be helpful as well.

You should put some more Topic tags on your Q. Medical, Doctor, Health, etc., so that it will reach a broader group…

What IS your white count value?

A Hematologist might be a good place to start. What kind of Doctors have you been seeing?

isn’t white blood cells supposed to stop bad guys? Isn’t having more the better? Like, it’s definitely better to have more bullets sun you go to a war right?

Well, it’s supposed to stop the “bad guys”, but once it has stopped them, their level should decrease back to normal. If for any reason whatsoever white blood cells do not stop the “bad guys”, they are constantly deployed at a higher rate, which results in a higher blood temperature and other listed symptoms. So maybe you’re infected with a virus that white blood cells cannot defeat, which means you should consult with some virologist.

Ah…maybe it’s normal for some people to have more white cells?

It seems you have a complex series of problems that are not easily described by one unifying diagnosis. Obviously, you are concerned about your white blood cell count being high, but, without knowing how high, or which particular cell type in the white blood cell family (neutrophil, monocyte, lymphocyte, basophil, eosinophil) is elevated, it isn’t possible to even begin to speculate. You should know that there is a normal range of white blood cell counts that vary from about 4–11,000 cells per cubic millimeter. So, if you have been around the high end of that number, it is probably just normal.

As far as what was listed on your discharge diagnosis, the likeliest explanation is not that someone was trying to whitewash your illness, but rather, that whoever filled it out simply listed the major diagnoses (like pneumonia).

Finally, if you really have a persistent, high white blood cell count (>11K) for years, then perhaps a consultation with an infectious diseases doctor or hematologist/oncologist is in order. That this has been going on for decades tends to argue against an infection, but still, one of those two specialists could provide a start.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a high white blood cell count usually indicates:

* An increased production of white blood cells to fight an infection
* A reaction to a drug that enhances white blood cell production
* A disease of bone marrow, causing abnormally high production of white blood cells
* An immune system disorder that increases white blood cell production

There are a number of potential causes, so what you really need is a good internist or primary care doctor who can look for possible causes and then refer you to the appropriate specialist or specialists.

Potential specialists you might see include allergists, hematologists, oncologists, infectious disease specialists, rheumatologists, geneticists, and others.

You don’t say whether you have your complete medical record from all sources or just the discharge summary for this particular hospitalization. If the latter then the diagnosis listed will only be the one(s) that prompted this particular hospitalization.

I suggest that before you go to the next doctor that you make a listing of symptoms and major illnesses over the years as well as your concerns and even your employment history, and then use that to make a logical presentation so the doctor has an idea of where to start.
