Hi, there!

I read a few of the questions and answers before I jumped in, just to get a lay of the place. After I read the guidelines, of course!

Welcome!

Hello trainwreck. Welcome to Fluther!

1. Read the guidelines linked to by @Eambos
2. Use Fluther search religiously before asking a question (search box on the top right corner).
3. When you have questions about the site, PM one of the moderators. Some mods include me and richard
4. If you find something offensive, use the “Flag as” button and let us know!
5. Only respond to questions when you feel you have something to contribute. Ex: don’t answer a “how do i bla bla bla?” Q with “I don’t know.” That is pretty pointless.
6. Check out our public chat room
7. Don’t be afraid to PM any of us for any questions!
8. GA (great answer) a quip/answer if you like it/if it helps you. Same for GQ (great question)
9. Add people to your Fluther if you want to specially follow their questions. To do this, go to their profile, and just click on “Add to my Fluther.”
10. Be yourself and enjoy your stay!!

To answer your Q up there ^^, you can reply to other people’s comments. If the reply is on topic with the question title, just reply as normal (you can use the @ feature, so they know who you are talking to, ex: @trainwreck), if the reply is off-topic, you can either PM them or use the whisper feature.

Once again, welcome!

Hi, @trainwreck, and welcome!

You are very wise to take an environmental check and ask questions. In addition to reading the guidelines, it’s a good idea to read around a little bit to get a feel for the culture. Also, why not fill in your profile to give the rest of us a sense of who you are?

Just out of curiosity, how did you happen to stumble in? I came here from another Q&A site that had become a battleground. Fluther’s ground rules and moderators help keep this environment much more pleasant and hospitable.

I am from a few sites that were around quite a while ago, nothing recent. But I’m I found this site through someone on LiveJournal, a member here, but I haven’t decided how much I want to open up yet, ha. I might fill out the profile. ;)

You can say plenty in your profile without giving yourself away! But take your time getting comfortable. No rush.

Fluther is different from other sites in that it is focused on building relationships and long term intelligent conversations. It is also actively and incisively moderated. The mods here are not afraid to use their judgment, and to use it quickly, unlike some other sites.

There is a broad range of ages, with most folks asking age-appropriate questions. Sometimes older folks get tired of younger folks asking the same questions over and over without researching them first. We hate questions that are googleable.

People try to be kind here, mostly, but sometimes patience gets tried, and people become a bit discourteous. Not me, of course ;-).

The culture here, despite the presence of so many young, is actually quite mature. Any attacks on others are quickly rooted out, so feuds can’t start. So far, we have been able to avoid the development of cliques, although, with the growth of the site, I don’t know how long that can remain the case.

As others have said, if you check to see if your question has been asked first, and use accepted spelling and grammar, you are off to a good start. Your questions should have plenty of detail so people understand what you really want.

If you provide interesting and useful answers, you’ll build a good reputation, and people will come to respect you. The political bent of this place skews towards liberalism, and even socialism, but respectful conservatives who don’t get all defensive fit in just fine.

A sense of humor really helps. People love humor. It’s even better if you can detct subtle humor, sarcasm and irony. On a personal note, I really love creativity and flights of fancy, even fantasy (in the sense of making up stuff).

Well, enough for now. I look forward to seeing you around. And compliment you on your question (although, I think it has been asked before, and also here).

Welcome! It’s a lovely little corner of the web. You are already off to a great start just by asking this question. Read a few different types of questions, and you’ll quickly get a feel for the site. Hope you enjoy your stay!

If I had known how to navigate the site I wouldn’t have asked a question that had been asked before. :)

No biggie. It’s a question that needs asking every now and again. :)
