Have you considered moving out of the USA?

Asked by susanc (16144points) March 1st, 2009

Because maybe we’re going down.
Or because you like another kind of life. Or because you’re young and full of juice. Whatever.

I’ve considered it many times, for multiple reasons. I don’t like a lot of the mentalities that I come across in this country and I’m sick of the general bullshit. But I also just want to travel and experience life in general. As I always tell people, “Why not move?”.

I would love to live in Europe for sometime. I’m very big about exploring other cultures. If not Europe then South America (Argentina or Chile).

Every time we return to the country after traveling I think about how nice it would be to live where we just were. The kids become more aware and open minded; we seem to connect on a different level and feel more in touch. The only places (out of the country) that I didn’t think I could live were London and certain parts of Mexico.

I think leaving this country, even if only for awhile, is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your perspective and for your level of awareness.

I’ve considered it, not because I hate it, I just really want to see the world.

I’ve considered it several times. Once, eight years ago when that Texas cowboy monkey got elected president. Since I refuse to fly (unless I suddenly grow wings) that only leaves Mexico or Canada. Since Mexico is; well, there is a reason its inhabitants all cross the border to come HERE for work, that leaves Canada. Not sure if I want to move farther north. Winter has some serious drawbacks. If I do go, it would have to be central or western Canada. I’ve met folks from Quebec, and I did not find them to be conducive to my style of thinking.

My wife and I would love to live in Italy someday.

We’ve been there twice and my wife spent Summers there as a kid/teen. We love the food and the history and the art. The people are fantastic and the landscapes breathtaking.

Ahhhh, I gotta go lay down now.

My best friend and I once researched how to fake our own deaths and were going to leave and not tell anyone. This was a dark period… financial troubles, break ups, school misery, etc. We wanted to move to Greece.

NEVER!
When my brother came home from Viet Nam he thought about emigrating to Australia. When he got the paperwork he saw they had serious issues about the ethnicity of emigrants. That was the deal breaker.
My Dad was also interested in moving to the Philippines in the early 70’s. There were relatives and he wanted a good standard of living after he retired. The year before he retired, Marcos started suspending civil liberties and there was incresed unrest so that never came about.

The lesson…look (very carefully) before you leap.

Yes. I am still thinking about it now. It is not about negative feelings toward the US, but more about travel and new horizons.

Could I move to Europe? A lot of the music I like comes from there.
Maybe Sweden, Germany or UK somewhere

I was born and lived in USA for 53 years, now I have been in Australia 11 years. I moved because I fell in love with an Australian and I was ready for a change of scenery. I love it here and cannot foresee ever moving back stateside. Once out of the major cities, life here is so much more relaxed. One should never generalize but seems people are less materialistic. I am tired of the Northern Territory which is where I live now. But Adelaide area is calling me and I think I will be there til I die.
