Is my iPhone ruined forever?

Asked by tinyfaery (44249points) March 1st, 2009

I somehow managed to empty a can of spray-on sunblock into my purse, and it seeped into my iPhone. Now my display looks like a lava lamp and the speaker volume is so low I cannot hear my phone ring. I have a warranty, but I’m pretty sure oil damage is not included. Is there anything I can do?

Wow, that stinks!
Another good reason to move away from all that harmful sun and live in the frigid cold.

I don’t know of anything you can do, but at least you have a very stylish paperweight now…

I enjoyed a free day at Disneyland (it’s my birthday), but it ended up costing me $399. It was almost 80 today; us So Cal residents are spoiled. =)

I know what you can ask your wife for as a present.

It was 23 degrees here today. : (

Today I dropped my iPhone into the dogs bowl of water. It was completely submerged. So far the only problem is that every time I turn it off it turns itself back on immediately. I found a lot of info when I googled it, I also saw something about an iphone dropped into cooking oil. Maybe that might have an answer for you.

I dropped my iphone and smashed the display, I took it to an Apple Store and talked to one their techies about it at their Genius Bar and they gave me a new phone for free, I don’t even have insurance. They just checked it for water damage, which it didn’t have, and then they replaced it, so you might consider just going there and letting them see it and then see what happens.

There’s a piece inside the headphone jack that turns from white to pink if there’s liquid damage done to the phone, which voids your warranty. Sorry :(

Happy Birthday, tiny and judi!

@miasmom I’m surprised they did that for you, you must have gotten on their good side. The warranty does not cover accidental damage whether water is involved or not. Generally, for an apple store to replace an iPhone for conditions not covered by the warranty it’s around $200, just be glad you don’t have to buy a new one outright from AT&T without the $200 discount.

You can always take it and play dumb. Just tell them it stopped working.

Happy birthday!

I really want to go to Disney for my birthday but I’m afraid that by the time we pay for all the expenses it’ll be too much.

The whiite disk inside my jack is still white, it’s the first thing I checked after I took it out of the water. So I guess that indicator doesn’t always work.
I’m taking it in today even though it’s out of warrenty.

I guess yesterday was a bad day for iPhones.

miasmom's avatar

@TheDeadWake I know, I was shocked too, but I’ve heard of them doing it before. I didn’t even have to beg, so that’s why I say, it never hurts to ask.

My guy dropped his on a tile floor. It shattered the screen. He went in, told them the truth, they looked him up in the system. Since it was his first offense, they replaced it for free. (“we don’t usually do this, but since you’ve only done it once, we’ll let it slide. but ONLY this time”)

Practice your puppy dog eyes before you head over to the Genius Bar.

That’s why you should always keep spray or pump bottles in plastic baggies so they don’t leak all over the place. You should also try to keep your phone in a separate pocket in your purse to avoid this type of situation.
