Don’t get me wrong, I love awesome iPhone apps… but why would you want to read a book from a small screen? I’d rather buy the actual textbook or invest in a Kindle. I think i’ll pass on iStrain.
Ditto. I had that app (forgot its name) and was impressed with the number of books they had on there. But I never used it and eventually deleted it.
I have the app called “Classics” – has a bunch of the great classics (The count of Monte Cristo, Alice in Wonderland, Paradise Lost, The Time Machine…etc) and they seem to update with more books now and then.
I like it because I can read them on 30 minute bus ride I have to take and I don’t need to have a copy of each of the books.
Don’t get me wrong, I still like to flip the paper pages, but this seemed like a good deal for 1.99 to get a dozen books.
I remembered – Stanza was the name of the app I panned above.
but i still need to know if they have college books?i mean i heard kindle 2 has college text books to download from it,problem is i already have an iphone and wouldnt want to spend 350 more for something that is almost the same as and iphone.
None of the ebook solutions for the iPhone that I’m familiar with have school textbooks available. One of them did let you upload your own text, but that probably wouldn’t help you.
Classics is a pretty good reading experience, but the rest were pretty crappy. The Iphone/iPod touch screen is just too small. It’s ok for occassional reading, but I wouldn’t want to rely on it for something like studying.
The answers above are giving you out of date info because they’re not considering the Kindle app (which you’re specifically asking about).
Yes, anything you can buy for the Kindle you can also buy for the Kindle app on iPhone. The difference is that you can’t buy directly from the iPhone; you have to buy using your computer and transfer the purchase.
I’ve used two other book-reading apps (haven’t tried Kindle yet) and found both excellent—I think it depends on one’s perspective, age and eyesight. If you’re young and already like reading on a screen, I think the iPhone is a perfect ebook reader.
The OP wasn’t specifically asking about the Kindle app for iPhone (this question preceeded it’s release by a few days). But you’re right that those responses are largely out of date since it’s release.
One particular point that the OP was concerned about was being able to purchase school texts and use them on the device. Now with the Kindle app apparently that is a possibility. I stand by my original assertion that I wouldn’t want to use an iPhone for extended reference like that, but YMMV.
A good solution for the OP might be to get the Kindle app and try reading a book with it, while also making sure the texts you want are available. If it doesn’t work for you it won’t have cost you anything (or very little if you buy a book) and you have the option of upgrading to a real Kindle (and keeping any books you bought) if you need to.
