Short Story of WWII Solider?

Asked by Amish_Ninja (230points) March 3rd, 2009

I was looking for a site that would tell of the life of an average solider during WWII while he was in Germany or Italy. Daily routines for soliders, food rations, and the like would be very helpful.

Average daily life for a German or Italian soldier, or daily avg. life for an Allied soldier in one of those countries?

Read “The Forgotten Soldier” << Le Soldat Oublie>> by Guy Sajer published around 30 years ago. Sajer was a Frenchman with a German mother who somehow got himself talked into joining the Wehrmacht and he ended up spending several horrifying years on the Russian Front.

This is a very long and detailed book, brutally descriptive and as I said, sometimes horrifying. Sajer retreated with the German army and was taken prisoner by the US Army just before the end of the war. (I read it a long time ago and my recollections might be a little off so pardon any factual inaccuracies)

Read it, if you can find it.
