IPhone question: my music seems to have disappeared...?

Asked by Trustinglife (6671points) March 4th, 2009

When I click on the iPod link on my phone, there is no music in there. I’ve had my iPhone for more than a year (original iPhone version) and never had a problem like this.

When I plugged my iPhone into my computer this morning, it told me that 4.46 GB of memory are taken up by “Other.” This is exactly the amount that used to be taken up by my music. When I tried to sync, I got an error message saying there isn’t enough capacity to add my music on there. I wonder what that “Other” is that is taking up 4.46 GB, and how to fix it. I’d much rather not reset and lose all my contacts. Any advice?

Hmmm… that’s a new one to me. “Other” is supposedly things like your stored Text messages and such. Have you searched the Apple site? – it has step-by-step troubleshooting guides and Discussion boards.

Did you/someone plug your iPhone into a different computer before this morning?

If the music is still on your computer it is easily resynced. Just reset your phone (it’s on the main page, the one that shows that bar of used space) and reload everything. Go through all those tabs at the top first and make sure the appropriate boxes are checked.

Restoring my phone seems to be an option of last resort, since I would lose all my contacts and settings, right? Applications, too? Ugh.

I checked my tabs, and the right things seem to be checked – nothing that wasn’t there last week. I’d love to know what “other” means, and what is taking up 4+ GB.

No… restoring your iPhone will not lose all your info. That’s why all that stuff is backed up into iTunes in the first place.

Restoring your iPhone will simply zero it out, reinstall the OS, and then reload all your music, contacts, appointments, apps, everything you have back on… assuming you have recently sync’d with iTunes and nothing new has been added since.

I just restored – thanks for the advice.
Man, it’s been an hour and a half so far, and still going! How long does it take?! I need to use my phone!

It worked!!!

The restore and sync from my backup ended up taking more than two hours. But now I have music again! The other consequence, if this ever happens to you and you need to restore, is that my apps are all completely out of order. And I had five screens of apps, so it will take awhile to get them the way I like them. Anyway, that’s not a big deal, and the saved data in the apps seems to be restored accurately.

Thanks for your input and ideas!
