I'm thinking of developing a Facebook app to flex my code skills: where can I find out how to monetize it and what kind of apps are popular /rewarding?

It would to be tough to create an app for facebook, when they already have created one themselves & it has become quite successful. Focus on creating an app that is for an untapped market/purpose.
