Is Turbo Tax really free?
My tax return will be very simple…I’m trying to decide whether to just do it by hand (like I have in the past) or use Turbo Tax. Is it really worth it?

in some cases, the federal is free and you pay for the state filing. in other cases, you have to pay for federal – i think it depends in part on what health insurance, retirement plans, etc. you have.
i live in a state with no state income tax, so for me, it was completely free.
It is free to fill it out for both federal and state, if you are in a certain tax bracket. If you want to do the e-file there are additional charges for that. I used it this year myself, but had to pay for everything. My mother, who is retired, had hers free.It is free to fill it out for both federal and state, if you are in a certain tax bracket. we only had to pay for the state, and it cost 9.95. we’ve used turbotax two years in a row, and it was the same last year.
I have used TaxAct.com for 10 years now. Like Turbo Tax, it is free to fill out and print the forms, but if you want to submit them via e-file (which is much faster) there are fees.
Yeah most of the top tax filing software is free until you submit to e-file. They will bait you in with free federal and free e-file for basic returns, but then you have to pay for state. Plus if you make a decent amount of money and aren’t in school, you probably don’t qualify for the basic “free” returns.
One of my favorites is File-2-Give though, possibly a little cheaper than TurboTax, but 100% of the profits from what you pay to file your tax return go to charity.
