Can you recommend a book about Einstein?

Asked by Trustinglife (6671points) March 6th, 2009

I am fascinated with his life (not so much his physics). I’ve read Einstein’s Dreams by Alan Lightman, and I wonder if you can recommend other books about this very interesting man.

PBS had a documentary about his wife.

It was very good.

I just finished Einstein’s Mistakes . It was an interesting departure from the typical bio in that it focuses on his mental process through the development of his theories, specifically the errors he made along the way. It’s not great prose, but it goes a long way toward demystifying Einstein, seeing into his very human mind.

That sounds very interesting. Did you enjoy it, Harp?

It was worth my time just for the unique perspective from which it looked at Einstein, but I found the author’s voice a bit intrusive. So, worthwhile? Yes. Enjoyable? Less so.

There’s a new one that just came out, called Einstein, His Life And Universe thatscsupposed to be amazing. My dad read it and thought it was, and I plan on reading it.

Walter Isaacson’s biography of him is about the best to date:

Same book recommended in the post above.

If you want to know more, try Einstein on Einstein, or at least about his work:

I first read this book when I was 14. The math was over my head at the time, but I got enough out of it to blow my mind. Einstein meant this book to make his theories accessible to ordinary people, and it succeeds admirably. He explains his breakthrough theories in the context of simple ideas; in the process, you get a real sense of his genius.

For something quite different read Einstein’s Dreams‘s_Dreams by Alan Lightman

I second Isaacson’s bio. This has been used as a reference for many modern documentaries about Einstein.
