Can I leave my plants in my room without watering them for a week.

Asked by PrancingUrchin (1944points) March 6th, 2009

They are both hanging plants, one is a Boston fern the other is an unknown ivy. Do the have to have water more while I’m gone for Spring break?

Depends: What type of plants?

If the plants can’t take it, fill a tub/sink/someting with 2 inches of water and leave all your plants there ;)

For one week, out of direct sun, they are probably OK. If you’re worried you could get watering bulbs.

If you place them in a tray of water under their plant pot they will drink what they want and last longer. This is better than drowning them which will turn the leaves yellow. This way only the roots get wet. My father used to have his own plant company and he would leave our house plants in the bath with shallow water while we were away.

Plants have secret lives when you’re away. You’ll want to make sure they are hydrated to balance out their taste for alcohol.

Probably unless your room is very warm. Plants generally need a little more water in spring and summer than fall and winter, but they will likely be ok if you water them thoroughly just before you leave. Or as other posters have suggested, place them in the bathtub with an inch or two of water in it.

Thank you all for the help. I’m leaving them here and not pawning them off on someone else.
