OK, three questions…how do I think it will affect their careers (which in and of itself is 2 questions), whose side am I on, and am I sick of the story already. Question #2 first, you can’t really take sides on a thing like this…if he beat her up, and it seems he did, then I hope he is punished severely, and I hope she comes to her senses and realizes she doesn’t have to live like this…unfortunately, talk to any cop and it’s almost a daily occurrence that they show up at some house where a woman has been beaten up by her guy and she’ll swear up and down he didn’t have anything to do with it…these women often end up dead, and perhaps that’s natural selection. Am I sick of the story? Well, I gave up on following the regular news some time ago, very little of it is important, the media is more concerned with making money than with informing the public about things that matter, and unfortunately what makes them money is what people want to hear about, and what the unwashed masses want to hear about are the private indiscretions of famous people. I have no taste for that, so I get all my news from Google News where I can pick and choose what stories to read, and I can find 3 or 4 articles on the same thing from different points of view and actually inform myself about what is going on of importance in the world. So, I knew there was something about these two involving him allegedly beating her, it wasn’t actually until today that I’d heard the gruesome details in fact, and OK, that’s gonna be a big story in our celebrity conscious trash news America. I’m no more sick of it than I am of any story that ultimately has no importance to my life, it’s just like I don’t like NASCAR, so I don’t watch it, I don’t like celebrity gossip, so I don’t watch the 6 o’clock news.
Now how will it affect their careers? Well first, I have a hard time seeing it have any direct impact on her career at all. Some might not want to listen to her because she won’t testify against him, others might sympathize with her and buy her albums because of it, but I say it’s immaterial…she keeps producing music people want to listen to, something like this just keeps her name in the news, she will live and die (just like the news that reports on her) by the market for what she is selling. Him? Same answer, though it’s a bit more complex. Regardless of whether he is guilty or innocent, and regardless of whether he is found to be guilty or innocent, there will be some people who think he’s guilty and some who think he’s innocent…the jury of public opinion will decide how he is viewed. Some who think he’s guilty will refuse to buy his albums, go to his shows, buy his merchandise, whatever. Some who think he’s innocent will have formed an unnatural emotional attachment to him and buy everything he puts out just to show their love and support. The rest of the world, it will mostly depend on whether or not he has talent.
Essentially that is true for both of them, they are pop stars, and though it is possible to be talented and be a pop star, talent, particularly of the musical variety, just is not a prerequisite. There is a TON of manufactured pop out there, much of it is derivative, familiar, lacking any substance. Over 99% of pop stars will fade away in short time, some will persevere…Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson were huge “pop” stars when music that was in and of itself not always great “art” propelled them to the heights of success…it was their sheer talent that made them legends unlike say Toni Basil, Rick Astley and Baltimora. Look a decade or so later, N*Sync (or as I called them, N*Suck), you got one of them whose claim to fame is being gay, and another one who interviews celebrities on the red carpet before big events…2 of them are completely out of sight, and then there’s Justin Timberlake who is crazy talented, and as such he’s a mega star who will not fade any time soon.
So, is Chris Brown a Justin Timberlake, or is he a Joey Fatone? Same thing with Rhianna. If either writes what should be a #1 single, guess what, it will probably become a #1 single. Regardless of what happens here. It may make it hard for Chris Brown to record new music if he’s behind bars, it might make it hard for him to get airplay on the radio for a while, but that’s the thing…if people are calling the radio station saying “I’ll boycott you if you play Chris Brown,” the radio stations are going to stop playing his music. But the brouhaha dies down and dude writes a #1 song, the station is going to HAVE to play it, if the people don’t want to hear it, he will fail, if they do want to hear it, he will succeed, no matter how much of a shitbag he is.
And look at your own music collection. I have probably 3,000 albums from maybe 700 different artists. What are the odds that every single one of those artists is someone who I’d like on a personal level? I’m sure some of them are utter assholes, and you know what, I don’t care. I like their art, I consume it, and I suspect that’s how most people are (except in the face of current and ongoing controversy, but it will die down eventually, and you’ll either end up with them being flashes in the pan…people who hit the jackpot by being where it was at for a brief period, or they’ll become megastars who are well respected artists).
In closing…how many Ike Turner, or Jackson Browne, or George Jones fans are going to burn their records because they beat their women? At the time these revelations were made, I’m sure a few did, but today? Water under the bridge.
