What's a good song for this assignment?

Asked by casheroo (18116points) March 6th, 2009

“submit song lyrics with poetic devices labeled”

I just need a song that would be appropriate for this assignment. I’m reading lyrics of songs I like, and they don’t have enough poetic devices (the ones that she is looking for)
My husband suggested Big Wheels Keep on Turnin’ already, but I am not doing that. lol

The Sounds of Silence by Paul Simon. My fifth grade teacher used it to teach us about metaphor, simile, and hyperbole. It has assonance, cacophony, and euphony too. Not to mention that it is a great song!

P.S. Proud Mary might not be a bad choice, don’t rule it out without at least going through the lyrics.

@SuperMouse I can’t use that one, that’s our example song! haha. Wow, funny that my college level course has the same example as your fifth grade class!

Ooh, try some Nick Drake. One of These Things First from Bryter Layter has a very simple rhyme scheme.

Feel Like I’m Fixin’ to Die Rag (“Country” Joe McDonald)

The song was a very popular Vietnam era protest song; you might get points for historical reference, parody, satire, many other devices.

@fireside, great answer! CSN&Y present a veritable treasure trove of songs for this assignment! That reminds me of Flying on the Ground is Wrong by Buffalo Springfield, that might be another good choice.
