Do the police have to put signs up if they have speed traps?

Asked by chapperz18 (2points) March 6th, 2009

i was in a 40zone turning into a 60 zone about 200yards away. i speed up and there was an undercover police car at the side of the road with a speed gun. Another police car caught up with me followed by the undercover car. I am a delivery driver and i already have 3 points, another 3 points and i wil lose my license. There was no signs saying there were speed traps, im happy to pay the £60 fine but need my license i would be prepared to take a speeding course.

I’m pretty sure for hand held speeding guns that they clock themselves they not. But if it’s a speed trap that is on a stand and is on the ground with no cop holding it they must show the numbers as u go by. So you know how fast u were going and that the trap was there.

not to be too….but doesnt that kinda defeat the purpose of a speed “trap”?

well yeah, but the law is that speed cameras have to be visable, yellow and have signs on the road. so if he was undercover and no signs is he alowed to do this?

I’ve never seen signs for speed traps before, they do them all the time down the street from me…you can obviously tell though, if you look for a cop standing in the road. My husband just got caught in one close by (actually twice in the past year…) But, no, they don’t put signs up where I live.

i’m pretty sure that they do: they’re called “Speed Limit” signs.

they put them speed camera signs up, and the law is that the cameras have to be visable. If it goes to court my only defence is if the gun was calibrated correctly?

No. They can enforce the speed limit without notifying drivers that they are doing so. If you violate the speed limit you are breaking the law.

A cop with a speed gun is not a speed camera.

Nope. speed traps(or legally running radar)do not require a warning to motorists. it appears you have a heavy foot on the gas pedal and maybe you should find some other form of employment that only requires riding the bus to work. like you said, 3 more points and your driving days are gone.
