What is the fastest growing religion in the USA?

Asked by timothykinney (2743points) March 7th, 2009

I recently received some spam email claiming that Islam is the fastest growing religion in America. I find this to be a suspicious claim, but I’m not really sure. So, there are different ways to define this:

* The religion whose absolute number of adherents is growing the fastest (by whatever means).
* The religion which is growing fastest in terms of percentage growth per year (by whatever means).
* The religion which is gaining the greatest number of converts.

If anybody has any actual data from a respectable source, please let me know. I am interested in any of the above definitions of fastest growing.

Thanks!

Wicca.

The fastest growing religion (in terms of percentage) is Wicca—a Neopagan religion that is sometimes referred to as Witchcraft. Numbers of adherents went from 8,000 in 1990 to 134,000 in 2001. Their numbers of adherents are doubling about every 30 months. 4,5 Wiccans in Australia have a very similar growth pattern, from fewer than 2,000 in 1996 to 9,000 in 2001. 10 In Canada, Wiccans and other Neopagans showed the greatest percentage growth of any faith group. They totaled 21,080 members in 1991, an increase of 281% from 1990.

See this site. Excerpt:

There is some good source for the quote regarding Islam. Here is a CNN report. Excerpt:

“The second-largest religion in the world after Christianity, Islam is also the fastest-growing religion. In the United States, for example, nearly 80 percent of the more than 1,200 mosques have been built in the past 12 years. ”

If, however, you look at the first site I referred to, you will see that “0.5% (of Americans) are Muslim, followers of Islam.”

From all the skateparks popping up in every town I would say Skatanism is on the rise.

Slippism. That’s the belief that Christ wasnt crucified but instead actually died from slipping in the shower.
Instead of giving the sign of the cross, Slippists put their hands out in front of them and move them in circles while saying, “Whooa.”

@chelseababyy Actually, that’s true, but I don’t consider it a religion.

I suppose non-belief is like.. being agnostic, in a way.

I would say Football, as a Religion is defined as something one follows Religiously therefore Football is by far the most popular.

@zerocarbon by that argument I would bet it’s baseball, not football.

I would wish it was Evelynism, but that would probably just make my life more complicated. Evelynism could be the new Scientology, with the right publicity.
