Help me solve my computer sound niggle...

Asked by Gavel (173points) October 25th, 2007

I switch my computer on and all’s fine in the world. I have sounds set to warn me of incoming email, typing errors and so on.
Strangely, though, the sounds stop. It happens at random times and the only way [I know how] to start them again is to reboot the computer, which is a real pain.
Grateful for any suggestions of how to fix the glitch.

What operating system are you using?
If you’re on XP, I’ve found that some programs/plugins/webpages can fiddle with the sound volume and ruin things for the whole party. When you lose your sound, what does the sound control panel say?

sounds like a possible inadvertently set keyboard shortcut may be muting. as andrew suggested, check your settings next time this happens by right clicking the speaker icon in the systray and selecting “open volume contol”. if mute is checked you can at least temporarily solve the issue by unchecking, then you can go about trancking down the culprit.
