I left uncooked chicken out for an hour. Is it safe to eat?

Asked by juniper (1910points) March 8th, 2009

I forgot I had uncooked chicken in my car and I left it out there for about an hour. The temperature was probably around 60 degrees.

Can I eat it?

I’m pretty sure, people do that to thaw chicken, so I’m sure you’ll be fine (:

Yes, it’s fine.

Yes – normally 2 hours is the limit at room temp, but I have left frozen chicken out that long to hurry up the thawing process and it was still icy on the surface.

It is fine. I’m sure it went through worse on the way to the store.

As long as you cook it!

Lightlyseared – Oh yeah – good point :)

Yeah. Thought it was worth a mention.

You really shouldn’t put warm food in the refrigerator, it should be room temp. Putting something warm in the fridge could raise the temp of whatever you place it next to promoting spoilage.

KimJSCP's avatar

galileogir, that is true, but under NO circumstance should any food be left at a temperature between 41 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 2 hours. If you are unable to cool your food enough to refrigerate it (that temperature depends on the capability of your fridge) within 2 hours, then it should have been split into smaller portions.

hubby says it’s fine. four hours is the rule of thumb for those sorts of things.

The majority of people around the world don’t use refrigerators, so your chicken should be just fine.

Casheroo – you should have read my post just before yours. Not to knock your hubby, but my answer is based on science – under NO circumstance should any food be left at a temperature between 41 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 2 hours.

@KimJSCP he’s servsafe certified, he didn’t pull that out of his ass.

Casheroo – I am USDA certified in food safety. http://www.fsis.usda.gov/PDF/How_Temperatures_Affect_Food.pdf
Tell your hubby to check his facts before he makes someone sick. Servsafe is based on the FDA food code – http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/RetailFoodProtection/FoodCode/FoodCode2009/ucm186451.htm
