How do I slow down the computer to play my son's game?

Asked by Bri_L (12219points) March 9th, 2009

My son got an older game meant for windows 98 and we run XP. Is there a way to slow things down for him. I have an nvidia graphics card.

You might try running it through a Windows 98 emulator. Most emulators have options to adjust processor speed.

(Every once and a while, I download and play an old game for the Apple ][. Good times.)

is this a program I down load?

Try this:

RIGHT CLICK on the NAME of the game installed. (START, PROGRAMS,GAMENAME)

Then click on Properties:

Click on the COMPATIBILITY tab.

On top, select “Compatibility Mode ” Windows 98.

Yeah, although I’ve never looked for one for Windows 98. Just google “Windows 98 emulator.”

(I have a feeling someone else will come up with a better suggestion. I’m not as familiar with tweaking Windows.)

thanks all. I will give them both a try!

On that same “COMPATIBILITY” tab, you may need to play with the display settings also (i.e., try one, if that doesn’t work try the next, etc.)

Let me know how that goes.

Wow, I never knew files had that option Mr_M. It will come in so handy with all those old games I have. I actually had an old PC with Win98 just for that reason (which was stolen recently btw). So hopefully this suggestion solves that problem.

@Jack79 I WISH I could tell you it ALWAYS will work, but it won’t for some reason. Good luck.

What a coincidence. A guy came to my door recently wanting to sell me a used Windows 98 machine that, apparently, fell off a truck or something.

There are also 3rd party download programs designed to slow down a computer to play older games which behave oddly on faster computers.

Also, check the website of the game giving you the problem. VERY often there will be instructions on how to run it on a faster machine.
