How do I fix my email forwarding?

Asked by nikipedia (28095points) March 9th, 2009

I have my school email set up to forward to gmail. It spontaneously stopped working and gives me the following error message:

Connection Error.
Server returned error “Connection reset by peer: The other server terminated our connection. Please…”

I contacted the computing services department at my school, and they said, “Yes, this is a common problem.” ...and nothing else.

Surely this is fixable, right? Can anyone help?

Without knowing what client your school email uses, I can only direct you to this page and hope that helps.

The other peer to talk to (the one reportedly terminating the connection) would be gmail – their tech support. It might be just a temporary outage – how long has it been a problem?

@aprilsimnel: We use this guy. Gmail suggests I talk to my mail client’s customer service. Huh.

@Zaku: My mail has not been successfully retrieved by gmail since 23 February. :(

If it’s a common problem then it’s probably the computing services department which is at fault, so keep bugging them to solve it ;-)

You could get another free email account (e.g. fastmail) and forward there. Possibly have that foward to gmail, if you want. That might get around the problem between your school and gmail’s enail systems.
