Where do you stand on the Political Compass?
This is inspired by the “How Progressive Are You?” thread. I saw this little quiz back during the presidential elections and liked it. The quiz and it’s results go beyond the traditional conservative right versus the liberal left by also bringing in a social dimension; authoritarian to libertarian. Another cool aspect is that they tell you where some of the world’s better known (for better or worse) leaders stand on the compass (i.e., Gandhi, Stalin, Thatcher, Hitler).
My answers landed me over in the bottom left corner, or the Libertarian/Left area of the compass, somewhere near Gandhi.
Side Note: There is also an app for this on Facebook so you can add it to your profile and have your friends take it too. That has led to some interesting discussions in my circle.
The Political Compass. Read this page first, then click on “Take the Test” on the left side of your screen.
Oh, and be sure to tell us where you land.

I think I’d be considered a Libertarian. I like Ron Paul
The Dali Lama and I share a dot almost exactly on the map.
Economic Left/Right: -5.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.41
I’m about as left as the Dalai Lama, but more libertarian.
I’m very close to the Dalai Lama as well.
Economic Left/Right: -4.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.62
I don’t know much about libertarianism. I always thought I had much more socialist political views.
I’m further left than Ghandi. I am hanging out somewhere between the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela. I am not remotely surprised.
I’m a hopeful anarchist. Meaning, I’m not allowed to live in this country as an anarchist. One day, I’d like to see people understand that anarchists, democracy members, etc. can all live in harmony. Until then, I suppose I’m a Libertarian. I don’t want to end up in jail for not paying taxes.
Im practically in the left, bottom corner. I’m a communist anarchist. Huh?
Economic -7.38
Social -6.82
Economic left/right: -4.62
Social Lib./Auth.: – 2.31
I’m very close to Gandhi.
That was fun.

No surprise that we’re all left of center though….
@ubersiren
I won’t turn you in…I hate paying taxes too.
@jamspoon We’re nieghbors.
I came out right next to HH the Dalai Lama. I’ll take company like that any day!
@tinyfaery and @Jamspoon I’m hanging out in almost the exact same location too. We can start a whole neighborhood. :)
At +2.38, -1.08 I’m apparently alone in the libertarian-right quadrant.
Economic Left/Right – -8.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian – -3.54
Pretty much on the same Social scale as Ghandi and slighty to his left on the economic scale.
Though I have taken this before, and it does eliminate some of the traditional problems with just the left/right way of thinking. As I recall there is something on here if you dig into the details about how other world leaders stand…I was looking at this quiz during the primaries for the 2008 elections and I remember that the only 2 lower left candiates were Kucinich and Gravel, and if you looked at everyone else, they were all in the upper right quadrant, with Bush being pretty high in the upper right corner, and Obama being pretty low in the upper right corner, sandwiched between Clinton and Edwards as I recall.
Which just goes to show what a conservative nation we are, or were. But my question that inspired this one kind of seems to show that perhaps we’ve moved a bit to the left these days.
@dalepetrie
“Which just goes to show what a conservative nation we are, or were.”
Or I would say how one needs to appear in order to get elected
didn’t someone ask this just before Christmas? I was a neonazi green libertarian communist with anarchic views supporting industrialist monarchy back then. I’m probably the same now.
I think I turned out to be Ghandi or something last time I took it.
@jasongarrett Looks like I’m the closest to you:
Economic Left/Right: 0.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.31
So I’m not right-wing, but I’m not left-wing either. I’m just an minor anarchist. ;)
I’m left libertarian, but not so much as I expected (-4.88 and -4.26). But I didn’t like a lot of the questions, I thought there should be a “neutral” option. For instance, I don’t agree with the death penalty, but I’m not convinced that it should never be an option. And, while I think there’s a ton of sex in media, I’m not convinced that we’re too open about it: I think we focus on skin rather than an open discussion of sexuality. So I feel like I’m actually a lot more liberal than this test made me out to be, because I had to choose one of four answers and in most cases my real response was more nuanced than that.
According to the test, I am an almost perfect match in location as the Dalai Lama. That surprises me. I feel I am a bit less liberal than this test made me out to be, but hey, the questions leave a lot to be desired.
I still think that the death penalty should be an option for the most heinous white collar crimes.
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.85 .. just a tad right of Ghandi
Economic Left/Right: -5.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -8.00
