First, Why do you go to these things.
My husband and I just saw Lisa Lampanelli for his birthday. I can’t remember the last time that I had laughed so hard.
We also saw Ron White a few months ago. He was hilarious! These are the only shows that we have seen in years. We used to go to a local comedy club quite often, but having children (and little money) put a stop to that. We would always be seated in the very front and we would often be targeted by the comedian. That always made it very memorable.
I generally love stand-up comedy. I used to work in this comedy club doing the lights when I was a student, and used that to do my final year thesis on the differences between UK and US stand-up comedy. That meant interviewing many famous comedians, which in itself was quite interesting.
The friendliest of all was Jenny Eclaire, who is so different off stage, all nice and sweet, and not at all intimidating. My favourite comedian though was Billy Connolly (as I said on a different thread). Never got to meet him in person, but he makes me laugh the most.
Mitch Hedberg, he was fantastic to see in a small venue.
@RP
Would have loved to have seen him..
David Cross is amazing live.
I go as often as I can, especially if I find somewhere with no cover. The drink minimums are terrible though… I had one night that, with drinks and covers, two friends and I racked up a 150.00 tab. Ouch. But I go when I can. My favorites thus far have been Godfrey and Mike Brint.
I saw Chris Rock a few years back here in Cleveland, OH. He was awesome! I can’t wait for this summer my boyfriend and I are getting tickets to see Jeff Dunham. We are always getting free tickets to Hilarities and the Improv where i live, so we go often and see all sorts of comics.
Coiln Mochrie and Brad Sherwood just came to Laramie and they were hilarious. We also just had Kyle Cease here last week. Totally awesome. I’ve been to Second City in Chicago a few times, and I must say that that is a must see event if you are ever in Chicago. It feels so good to laugh.
I love the Improv show at Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island. I wish I could go more often!!
I go to DC Improv whenever I can.
A friend of mine is the wife of a standup comedian, so sometimes I get VIP passes.
Why yes, I am awesome.
There are some great stand-up spots here in Seattle and I have seen some really great big names: Jeffery Ross, Bob Saget, and a few others, but I must say the most fun I have at a comedy show is when the opening act or some local amateur gets on stage and blows everyone away. I don’t know if it’s the fact that I don’t have high expectations for those types of acts, but nothing compares to some of the funny local openers and amateurs I’ve seen.
Oh, and so far Mike Birbiglia and Dane Cook’s Vicious Circle taping in Boston were my favorites.
Birbigs because he’s hilarious.
Dane because I can see myself in the crowd. Lime green sweatshirt for the win!
I used to perform improv and sketch comedy (because I am a masochist).
The best stand-up I’ve seen live is Eddie Izzard, who I’ve seen three times now, the latest being his 2008 Stripped tour. Oh, he had me rolling. But it’s rare that I go to a club to see stand-up. There’s comedy theaters in NYC where I’ve gone to shows that didn’t have the seriously overpriced drink minimums. I hate those. I’m not paying $10 for a Coke.
Anyhoo, I’ve seen David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Mark Maron, Kristen Schaal (she reminds me of Gracie Allen, reincarnated), Baron Vaughn, Aziz Ansari, Mike Myers and a lot of other people. I saw Tommy Tiernan in London when I was there (Ah! What a hottie!).
The first stand-up show I saw live was Eddie Murphy for his RAW tour years ago at the Dane County Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin when I was 19. I still have the stub!
lurve for eddie. :D
I missed his show because we got lost, but I got to hug him and talk to him afterwards. I was the only one who got a hug, even though others asked. Bonus point: He was wearing his ims.
@asmonet – He has truly excellent taste in footwear, as well. What are “ims”? His fake bosoms?
Yes, because they aren’t planted. He mentions it from time to time. :)
Oh, I’ve seen them, I just wasn’t sure if I remembered the name.
I’ve only seen one comedy show, and that was Bill Cosby about 3 years ago. Oh my god, we laughed until we had snot flying out of our noses. He did a whole bit without even talking. He is comedy gold.
A close second was David Copperfield. I know he’s a magician, but he was funny as hell. And hot.
@ubersiren – David Copperfield? Really? Is he, like, “post-plastic surgery” hot? Or just hot? Because some people, they look good, but you know it’s from a scalpel.
I’ve only ever seen one show, and that was Penn & Teller.
I’d love to see more, we had a great time at the show. I’ve always wanted to see Eddie Izzard
@casheroo: If you have to shell out the bucks to see him, do it. He’s wonderful.
@asmonet : no way, he’s very attractive.
If I saw that man in an alley, I’d yell ‘Fire’.
I recently went into NYC to see Will Ferrel’s new George Bush show “You’re Welcome America”. That was awesome but not as good as when my dad brought me to see George Carlin three years ago.
SAK comedy club in Orlando, FL. It’s an improv club were lots of comedians actually got their start. It’s a school by day and the pro’s come out on friday and saturday nights to do shows. They take suggestions from the crowd and everything, it rocks! I’ve been at least ten times, it’s never a let down! You’ll laugh till you cry at least once per show.
