On Mac, how can I play an mp4 file with subtitles? (there are two subtitle files, with .idx and .sub extensions)

Asked by marmoset (1341points) March 13th, 2009

I have three files: an mp4, and a folder called Subtitles that contains a .sub file and an .idx file.

The mp4 plays fine in both VLC and QT, as an mp4 usually would. But in either of those apps, the subtitles option is grayed out on the View menu so I can’t enable it.

SOLVED—I posted too hastily. :)

For some reason, restarting VLC made a difference (I don’t see why that would make a difference in this case, but now they’re working fine together and I’ve got subs).

I can actually never get subtitle files to work correctly in VLC on my mac! I’ll try restarting it next time then, hahaha. This has been like a public service announcement. :)

Typically the two pieces of advice are 1) have the subtitle files inside the same directory as the video, and 2) make sure that in the “Video” menu, the item “Subtitle Track” is on. If the menu item “Subtitle Track” is greyed out, then probably VLC can’t recognize the subtitle files.
