What kinds of foods are best to take with medicine?

Asked by juniper (1910points) March 13th, 2009

I have a weak stomach, so I have to take lots of food with pills to prevent nausea. Which foods will do the job, best?

Can you work things so that you take the pills after a regular meal, like breakfast or lunch? You don’t need LOTS of food, however. I take pills after breakfast (a bowl of cereal) and after dinner (the usual meat and veggies). Milk is supposed to be a good thing to add to prevent the nausea (unless you’re lactose intolerant).

I take it before bed, but not regularly. The tricky part is that sometimes I have to take it in the middle of the night and I reaaaaaaally don’t feel like eating anything. I usually do soup at that time…but I’m getting sick of soup.

Soup in the middle of the night? Then you even have to heat it up in the middle of the night. Bummer. What do you LIKE to eat? Fruit? Toast? Crackers? Try what you LIKE to eat before you take the pills and see how things work. Jelly and crackers? Cookies and milk?

Are you finding you can eat certain meals and you’re not happy with the effect?

Eat whatever you have been known to eat successfully and never throw up. I’m not sure you can beat soup in terms of ease to eat, however. Maybe try different soups? Creme soups?

Depends on the type of pill. Milk slows the absorption of a number of medicines.

actually, some foods may affect drug absorption.

Do you talk to your doctor about your problem? Your Pharmacist? Do your medicine bottles have any food warnings on them? Some of mine say don’t take with grapefruit juice.

Eating lots of food can make you nauseous. If you put more food into your stomach than it can handle at one time your body may try to solve the problem itself the only way it can.

Ginger is good for nausea. Maybe a cup of ginger tea in addition to food. You can find ginger candy in asian markets.

I personally eat carbs when I take medication, it’s the only thing that helps me from getting sick. Something like bread, pretzels, crackers..

I like biscuits with my biscuits.

Crackers or a handful of dry cereal ought to do the trick.

People mention milk. Be careful eating dairy products with medicine (Tetracycline I think). There should be a warning with your prescription. Also, grapefruit clashes with some blood pressure medicine (Dilacor and others). Read the accompanying literature.
