Do you ever get the impression that your pet is in a bad mood?

Asked by tinyfaery (44249points) March 13th, 2009

Every once in awhile my oldest cat, Flower, seems like she is in a bad mood. If the other cats come near her she growls and hisses. When I try to pet her, she gives me the cold shoulder and gets up and walks away. She’ll act like this for a week or two and then go back to her normal, kitteny self. Can an animal just be in a bad mood?

Yes, vladimira gets pissy sometimes, especially around molt time. She hits everything and will attack anything that moves near her. Not a good time lol.

id take a pissed off kitty any day lol

Yep. My two cats will definitely let you know when they are not amused.

Maybe she’s on the rag.

If this is a fairly new cycle you may want to take her to the vet to be sure there are no physical problems ie:pain causing the irritability.

I do not have cats thus cannot really say about moods. My dogs are the same day in and day out.

Sure. I think animals have a lot of same emotions people do. My dogs gets pissy, or depressed, or happy, etc…why wouldn’t they?

Cat is spayed; no period.
This is not new. She has been like this since she was a kitten.

When she is going to the “doggie spa.” I swear she can tell by the direction I drive my car!!

We have 5 cats and two of those will let us know if they’re not in the mood for company or attention much like yours, @tinyfaery. One of them is a former stray and he’ll give the occasional growl toward the other 4 to warn them to stay away. One of our female cats will simply walk away from us and ignore us but she’s also been known to bat our hands away with her front paws when we try to pet her.

Catgut & Max have no problem letting everyone know when they are not happy.

Cute question… and yes. My cat is very moody.

@uberbatman: There are Vets who would treat (or even touch) Vladimira?

Milo always knowa that being in the carrying case in the car is bad news. About a mile before arrival at destination, be it the Vet’s or Animal Shelter for manicure, he throws up. And he is much happier now that it is warm and he can go out and be outfoxed by all the awakening rodents

My one cat gets an attitude, especially when he thinks I’m going to let our son near him. He gets angry at me for that, and gives me nasty looks lol

Blondesjon's avatar

Only when he’s jonesin’.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@gailcalled nope lol. Very little is actually known about mantis shrimp as most people dont even keep them as pets, so it makes their care a bit tricky at times, but so far ive been lucky :)

@uberbatman: Do you have a teeny stethoscope and blood pressure cuff?

Oh, yeah! GiGi gets a little snitty a few days a month. My husband noted it is around the time of the full moon. She also is spayed, so it’s not that. But her whole personality changes. Where she is usually playful, she will refuse to play or snuggle and just seems to want to be left alone. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. Just like peeps, animals may have off-days and not want to be so damn happy all the time either.

Yes, they have their moody days too! I have no idea what causes them, but there you have it. :)

Yes, it must be. On occasion, my critter walks to the open slider door and pees right in front of it without stepping outside. I blame this on my mother who talks to him in a ridiculous (strangling duck) tone of voice he’s not accustomed to.
