Why do my torrent speeds go up and down like a wave?

Asked by Spargett (5398points) October 30th, 2007

I’ve noticed when downloading things that sometimes the torrents speed gently goes up, then back down, then back up… all in perfect rhythm. What is the logic behind this happening?

Does is have something to do with the seed to peer ratio? Again, I stress that this phenomenon is consistent throughout the entire download and moves far too predictably for it to just be seeders and leechers dropping off at that very moment.

I believe it relates to the fluctuation between you downloading at a fast rate & seeding at a slow rate & then the two switch. You seed at a fast rate & download at a slow rate. It changes the speed of both back & forth so everyone gets a little bit of something. If you downloaded fast the whole time & seeded slow, your file would finish & you could disconnect & stop seeding, which leaves everyone else with less people to seed from.
